i was going to replace my steering gear today because it's leaking and has slack in it but when i went to take my centerlink off the pitman arm i couldnt get it out. i soaked it in pb blaster and tried prying with the pry bar and hitting not too hard on the end of the pitman arm where the center link goes through it. still couldnt get it out. any suggestions or advice on how to get it loose?

You need a tie rod end puller or a pickle fork to separate the tapered stud on it.

Alternatively you could use a hammer and wailing on the end of the arm to break the taper loose, though this could potentially damage the steering gear if you don't have another hammer up against the other side to deflect the blows from traveling up the sector shaft. However since you say the box is already shot, then maybe it's worth a try.

Pickle fork is the way to go :icon_thumby:

Only if you don't care about the dust boot. Though I've heard that a piece of heater hose can make a fair substitute if you have to re-use the drag link. Personally, as 4x4junkie says, I've had good luck using a heavy hammer and a 3lb sledge or equivalents.
Good luck,

Richard

Beat it with a hammer....you're replacing the steering box anyways.
