primitive brake disk manufacturing in Asia Youtube

There are a whole bunch of those type of videos on YouTube. As long as the metallurgy was done right I guess I have no problem with it, the concept of how they sand cast parts like that is totally sound. It does irritate me that "we" get lectured on how bad we're polluting and ruining the earth but these guys are fine.

I think I got some air filters for my compressor from one of those sweat shops:

I’m kinda impressed with that all, especially knowing that it’s how things were largely done prior to current manufacturing techniques. Should be an inspiration to us all that you don’t need tons of fancy equipment to make stuff so when we need something one-off, we should remember that people did things for a long time with simple tools and hard work and people still do, so we just need to apply ourselves to the problem at hand rather than whine about it.

But I want to whine!

That whole process is not viable if you have to pay them a decent wage. I worked for a company that had this complex manufacturing process with all these timed sequences and it was done with a automated machine. They moved the product to India, but the agreement with India was they would let them move there if they hired so many people. They did move over there, and the machine also. But instead of being automated, they had all these people over there tending the line with stop watches, manually timing and running the machine.

And you wonder why everything you buy now is hit or miss. We had the FDA over here monitoring the process, I doubt anyone was monitoring what was going on over there, and they make the same product with the same label.

Exactly. That's why imported stuff from China/Asia is cheap.
Ain't any EPA, OSHA, EEOC, NLRB, FDA, workers' comp.
I used to own a small business. My monthly insurance bill was $1800 and $1200 of that was workers' comp even though we never had any claims. Got to where I was paying the government and insurance companies a lot more than I was making for myself every month. Wasn't worth being in business. Sold company at a loss just to unload it.
