OK, I am not sure why it did this. I am not new to auto painting but it has been many years since I did one. And this is the first time using this gun and primer. Anyway, the primer turned out like sandpaper. Bad material? Not enough air in the mix? Not enough air pressure? Too thick? Looks like I'll be sanding almost all of this back off but i want to know what went wrong so I don't repeat the problem.

sounds like it went on "dry" did you try reducing your air pressure? how about using mor thinner?

try thinning it a bit more or if you already thined it correctly just try sprayin it a little heavier on move the gun a little closer to truck or just turn air down couple pounds easy fix just dont be affraid of runns it only primer get it on thick and wet if it runs in a few spots no biggy easy to block out you can tell when sprayin of it goin to run or not and if it to heavy move a little faster and it should go on nice and smooth and heavy enough you can sand and work with it a bit

I think I mixed it too thick thinking that would build it up better. WRONG. Back to the parts store.

It's whatever brand they sell at NAPA. It's the only place around here to buy it other than Autozone, and NAPA was cheaper.

i used to do painting with a spray gun and it sounds like u either had a bit of contamination or this product is not mixed right

you using duplicolor primer, did you mix it with reducer or laquer thinner?

a good rule of thumb is when you add the thinner, doing a 50/50 mix, when you stir the paint, pull the sticxk up, and watch the paint run off the stick, it should only pour for a sec, then turn to a drip, thats how i mix my paint. and make sure its not humid when you spray lacquers, it will screw up the evaporation process

OK redneck painting question. Since primer is going to get sanded almost all the way off is it required to be sprayed on or could I thin it as directed and use a very short nap paint roller? Seriously, would this work?

it might work the only thing is you will get a really heavy orange peel i would think and the areas it doesn't need to be sanded off might take a little more sanding and the heavy orange peel will just cause a lot more sanding than needed i would just spray it again and just watch when it goes on you want it to look heavy and shinny but not to heavy or it will run takes a bit of practice but the odd run ain't no big deal just sand it down just make sure you watchin as you sprayin heavy wet lookin just not to heavy make your first coat a thin wet layer than after that taks up do a sec and third a little heavyier and give it about 10 minutes or so to tak up dependin on how warm it is where you sprayin the product wont cause the ruff feeling just got make it a little wetter you can you the cheapest product out there and get it on smooth i was a primer man for 4 years in a body shop it takes a few times to get it down pat

PPG actually makes a primer thats made for rolling. You could try it with normal surfacer, but I've never tried it so I don't know.

To the OP, it sounds like your air pressure was TOO high, and you were putting it on too thin. Don't be afraid to put primer on a little wet.
