Someday when I build my tow rig it is going to be about an 85 F-350, 4x4, dual rear wheel, with about a 10' steak body. The powerplant is going to be a 10:1 compression, aluminum headed 449 (390 stroker) with either an NV4500 or a T-18 with a gear splitter overdrive.

I should really start saving up now...

Closest thing I have to a tow rig.

1987 Dodge PowerRam 150 4x4
318 V8, 4speed Auto.

My father paid 500 for her about a year ago, after he stopped driving his 1987 2wd with a manual, same engine. He drove that truck for 8 years, only paying 800 for it.

Pretty damn tough trucks.

That era Dodge ('81-'93) was kinda bad. Dodge was sucking (the bailout was '79), quality was horrible. The engine options were between 225 and 360cid--the B engines were dropped before that body style came out. The crew cab was gone too. It was the worst generation of any full-size pickup in my opinion. The 360 was a good motor, but if you wanted serious power for towing something you had to get a Ford or GM for the 460 or 454. In '89 the Cummins became available but it wasnt until the 94s that Dodge got its respect back with the V10 coming out and overpowering the GM and Fords.

I'm not going by power, I'm going by the reliability of the truck. They have far outlasted any of the fords or chevy's we've had from the same era. Well, our '78 C10 was a pretty good truck, until a tree fell on it at least. And when you say the B engines were dropped before that body style, this was the only body style until 1993, the Ram line started in 1981?

No, I still got it could never sale that truck. The 460 is just to hard on fuel, and towing with 38s is kinda scary. But mostly I don't like towing with a truck that already illegal in my state due to lift laws and bumper hights etc. Its just another one of my play toys now as if I was short on them already lol.

Right. Before that, you could get a big V8 and a crewcab.

Those were shit in all regards. Chrysler was notorious for putting lighter parts in and badging them up heavier. It's nothing everyone doesn't know. The 1994 was a godsend for them--finally making a real truck again.

here is my 2002 chevy 2500HD. its a long one with a crew cab and ling bed. she has a 8" lift on 37s, stock 3.73s, exhaust and PPE Hot+2 chip set on 2 (need a tranny for any higher stage) I have done a bunch of little stuff to it for looks and tow better. she has 120,000 on her and gets 22 mpg on highway! dont htink id ever get rid of this truck, its been way too good to me
