Larger rotors also give more stopping power from the increased leverage, think of how well brakes work on mountain bikes with large wheels compared to BMX bikes with small wheels, it's a night and day difference.
 
It doesn't allow more area. The size of the pads dictates that. The mass of the rotor has a lot to do with how much heat it can absorb without the pad losing its grip and the rotor deforming.

It's an advertising gimmick measurement.

Just a thought, but don't you think the size of the pads is directly proportional to the size of the rotors? :icon_confused: I do however agree that a thicker rotor will heat and cool slower, therefore reducing the chances of warping.

You can get a bigger pad on a bigger rotor though and have it cool better. Make the rotor bigger and make the pad bigger at the same ratio and it will stop better, I don't know if they do that though. I assume the front rotors on my dad's F-350 are bigger than my Rangers for a reason...

Navistar puts 15" disks on their medium duty trucks and buses. That makes diameter a fairly meaningless dimension to me. I'm not a brake systems engineer but I'm sure the brakes on a 7,000# GVWR pickup are toys compared to the brakes on a 25,000# GVWR 4700 International.

Some semi tractors don't even have front brakes...
 
True. But the front axle of a road tractor doesn't get the load dumped on it during a stop so it's a totally different animal. A straight truck or bus has the same characteristics as a pickup during a stop.

Point is, this 5-ton dump has 15" brake disks on all 4 wheels. It has calipers with dual 2.5" pistons and that's where the stopping power comes from.
