I swapped a 94 4.0 into my 92 Ranger. I kept my injectors, fuel rail, upper intake and exhaust manifolds. I put new plugs and wires. It runs as smooth as silk with plenty of power but only gets 14.7 miles per gallon. Can anyone tell me anything to improve this? My old engine got about 18 mpg.

thats better than my trucks gettin (1992 4L) not bad for the winter. K&N air filter might get you a mpg or so another thing you could buy if you have the money is a throttle body spacer these can add about 2 or 3 mpg if your interested you can check out www.andysautosport.com

My 01 edge 4l stock only got about 16mpg. Dont know why? Seem to me the 4l love the gas. I now have a k&n cold air, throttle body spacer, dual flowmaster. It will be pushing to get 14mpg now, but the 33x12.50 dont help.

Don't waste your money on the K&N and TB spacer.
They wont do a thing for the mileage or performance.
Did you use Motorcraft or Autrolite plugs?
Have you checked to make sure the sensors are working properly and within range?
Is it reaching the correct operating temp?
Is the timing set properly?
Are you usng synthetic lube?
0W-30 oil in winter and 5W-30 oil in summer?
I have an "89 BII w/ 5 inches of lift, and she averages 20 mpg year round, and has gotten as good as 24 mpg.
My '98 Ranger 2wd gets a solid 20, but I tend to hot-rod her a bit, so she could get better if I kept my foot out of it.

at best i get 15 in the winter, there are many things to take into account with fuel economy, winter in cold areas will reduce fuel economy for several reasons, if you dont live in a cold winter area, check tire pressure and air filter. gearing/tire size could also affect mpg.

k&n filter defidently is worth the money, it does get better fuel economy i have noticed with my 92 ranger. and it is washable and re-useable, 60 bucks for my filter will last a lifetime instead of a new 10 doller air filter every year, the oil used to clean it also catches more dirt and debris from the air

I have a 93 4.0L 113k with 3.73 gears rockin 35's lol I get about 15-16 mpg. I drive like a grandma tho...

Just do these very simple steps..
-Oil change with a new filter (good deals at advance auto parts)
-K&N pannel air filter ( cheap, and you'll never need another airfilter, just clean it with a "re-charge kit they sell)
-New Motorcraft spark plugs 1990-1996 uses SP486 (Platinum) (old part number is AWSF42P)
-New Fuel Filter
-Top off antifreeze/coolent
-Check tire pressure

Might want to also check on your fuel pump assembly. Might as well replace the damn old thing anyways..Pepboys had them the cheapest when I bought mine.

14 to 15 mpg is pretty good for the 4.0, but the 10% ethanol rating at the pumps is probably what is lowering all of our gas mileage.

Good luck
