PlumCrazy's Build

That is one hell of a rehab. Nice work. What did the trailer set you back in turd form?

I dropped $700 on it. Guy was asking $950, but I used garbage tires as my leverage.

I keep seeing similar trailers for 1500ish, but always seem to need a coat of paint, rewired, and tires as well.lol

I probably would end up with a full rebuild regardless of the condition I bought one in.lol From the manufacturer most trailers are not even painted underneath nor do they seem to have legit wiring for lights/brakes. All said and done Im still less than 2/3 the cost of brand new for a similar size trailer and this one is setup how I want. The frame on this one is heavy enough to put 6000lb axles under if I find that these 3500lbers wont do the job. I did upgrade to 225/75-15 rubber which is a load ranger D vs the normal 205 load range C rubber found on most 5 lug axles.

Id like another 8-10" between the fenders, but we will see how the Ranger fits before I go building provisions for a drive over setup.

Not much happening in my garage lately... Been busy with harvest and side jobs.

I did pick my heads back up from the machine shop, new one piece SS valves are in and lapped with new seals and heavy springs. Hopefully I'll get the motor together and in by the end of the month.

Taking a break and heading down to Charrlotte for race this weekend, hopefully I'll get back in time Sunday to get something done....been wrenching on the tractor project with what little free time I have...

The tractor project is a slow moving one.

1955 WD45, Great Grandpa bought new in 58 (Sat on the lot that long, got it cheap because the newer D series was already out) and he traded in some time in the 70s, our neighbor bought it off the lot shortly after that. I bought it back in 2012ish.

Anywho, I put new rubber on it, electronic ignition, repaired battery box, rewired the lights to look original, did some sheet metal work, rebuilt the steering box/spindles, replaced the manifold, replaced the radiator since it had a few repaired/blocked off cores from the fan getting into it. (dad smashed it when he was 12 years old.lol) rebuilt the carb, and now just getting the last few things squared away before paint.

I scored a brand new NOS Allis hood from the mid 50s a while back but it was for the WC with a small exhaust hole. I rigged up a jig using wood to guide the hole saw and prevent it from walking or snagging.

Then I drug this thing home a week or so ago. 1948/9 WD. I'd like to use it for a antique puller with 6 cyl Buda gas swap.... But that's later.

Here is fraction of our growing collection of future projects...

We have WC from 35ish up to a 170 from the early 70s.... and almost everything in between. Still like to get another D17 like the one Dad grew up on and a styled WC to complete the entire line of the 4 cyl gas AC tractors. All of them from 33 until the mid 70s used the same basic engine. (Minor changes, but all interchangeable)

My uncle is an AC fan. He only keeps a few around at a time but he's always trading them. Also the local AutoZone manager collects ACs so I always talk tractors with him when I'm in there. He's probably between us in age so it's easy to strike up conversation with him.

Small update....

Heads are on.

Then I distracted and decided to reunite the WD45 and the snap coupler blade after 45 years apart. (This tractors number one job in the 60s was scraping the barn lots)

I smoothed out our driveway around the pond from where the county has been dumping fill in the pond.

Then put the ole girl to work moving stalk bales around.

Last night we decided to drag home a new toy..bought a Series I D17. It was cheap, and upon closer inspection,,,we figured out why. Started and ran like a champ, noticed the radiator leaked, front hubs are shot, and the steering gear has been apart and reassembled wrong, not big deal, its a 50 year old tractor. The real bad part was after it warmed up and pushed the dipstick out of the crankcase with oil/water mix.

Still not a bad deal, it will make a nice little work horse after an overhaul and some TLC.

Good to see you putting the trailer to use. Soon it needs a ranger on it though.

What headgaskets did you use?

And it all looks great man!

Clutch showed up...pressure plate bolts, pilot bearing, and oil pump shaft should be here today.

I need to pay my buddy a visit to get my cam sensor sync tool back so I can drop the oil pump drive in. Then the motor can go in. The rockers are on, I am putting off building the rocker arm oiling setup until later, I want to hear the damn thing run already.lol

The motor needs to come off the stand for the headers to actually bolt up, and same goes for the clutch/flywheel. I had to notch the valve covers a bit the clear the center outboard head studs on both banks as well.

In other news...my brother picked up an FJ80 (Land Cruiser). Now I am in love. Its solid axle radius arm front/parallel 4 link rear, beefy 4.5l I6, and has a selectable center diff. Needed a rear main and a lot of little leaks sealed up, but its a clean frame/body SoCal rig.
