Hey I'm setting up 4.56's in my 31 spline 8.8. I got a .012 backlash and I'm basing my pinion depth on the pattern. This will be a daily driver so I am really being a pattern nazi. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Looks like I might need a thicker pinion shim to move the pattern away from the face a little? It doesn't look centered to me. Doing so will also move the drive pattern slightly toward the toe and the coast pattern slightly toward the heel. That sounds like just what I need. Looks like I answered my own question. I'll add a shim and update you guys.

Yeah, definitely needs a thicker pinion shim (maybe try +.005-.007" or so).

I'd maybe close up the backlash a little more also.

The thinnest shims that came with my kit are .010. I guess I'll do with what I got and hope for the best.

Okay, so here is what I got after moving the pinion closer to the carrier. This is the best I can get while staying in the backlash tolerances. My backlash here is .009

Here is the drive pattern. It looks pretty good, and it is the best I could get it after 5 hours of fiddling with it.

And here is the coast. This just does not want to cooperate. Is the coast pattern that big of a deal as long as the drive looks good and the coast is at least centered? I read somewhere that you mainly want to base you new gear's pattern by solely the drive pattern. Hmm.

The place that set up my gears on my Mustang (some 15 years ago) did not put the coast at it's proper measurement. I'd like to wring their neck. It hums when I coast, and is annoying as hell. Do it right the first time.

I'm thinking of swapping the gears out again just to get rid of the hum.

you are doing one thing ill never try and attempt. but like shane said, get her done perfect the 1st time, because next time it will be covered in gear oil.

That pattern isn't gonna work (it was actually better before).

What size is your pinion shim stack?

Really? It looked too high up to me. And my pinion stack is .050"

I would probably be able to set it up correctly if I had smaller thickness shims. The thinnest carrier and pinion shims are .010"

WTF kit you got that only gives you .010" shims??

I'd try a .030" stack and then maybe see about getting some .003, .005" and .007" shims from a local rearend shop maybe.

I have a Motive 8.8 master install kit. :dunno:

Same with the Ford Racing 4.56' s I bought. The thinnest pinion shims included were .010". Maybe that is why I am having a hard time...

.030" is the standard pinion shim thickness for an 8.8". Generally you won't need to go much further than +/- .002".

My pinion shim stack consists of only 2 shims, totaling .028"

Yea as you can tell I was trying everything and anything. I'm gonna have to buy a better install kit since Motive thought it would be a good idea to only include .010, .015, and .020 shims.

My thinner ones were stuck together REAL GOOD with whatever the packaging grease they use is. On several occasions some of my carrier shims turned out to be 2/3 thinner shims.

Just throwing it out there for the sake of mentioning it. :icon_thumby:

I guess it wouldn't hurt to check again...but after looking at those little shits for two days I think none of them are stuck together.
