Already planning to wire my attached garage with plugs all the way around, and going to insulate it and put a wall covering up. The only thing is that I've been considering wiring, insulating, vapor barrier and than covering the walls with a thin plywood and than drywall. Reason for the drywall is to hang stuff on the wall and not worry it pulling out of the drywall. I want drywall because of the clean look and don't want the rough look of plywood.

I guess the option would be

1.) Plain Drywall, with no plywood backing.

2.) Plain Plywood with no drywall.

3.) Drywall backed with plywood.

I guess I could use plywood and a skim coat of plaster and than texture coating, but how to make sure the seems don't split and show.

Any thoughts?

If your worried about looks, I'd use good one side plywood. If you really want you could mud the seams and sand it down......

If ya really wanna get fancy, drywall the upper half and diamond plate the lower. That'll keep it from gettin dinged and dented.

When you run the wires for the outlets use #12 wire and be sure you drill close to the center of your studs so you do not inadverntly run a nail or screw through the wire. If you are close to the surface of the 2 x 4 you are mounting the interior wall finish put nail plates over the spot for additional protection.

:)

That idea I like. Go with the drywall. That way, you'll get some fire protection as well (if you use the right stuff) Also, while you're re-doing the garage, think about plumbing for air lines, a new floor (epoxy paint or other types), and making sure the lighting is up to par, and cabinates if you need them.

Beadboard looks pretty cool, and sure easier than sheetrock.I have sheetrock,my parents have beadboard, their garage is way better looking.

Hanging stuff is not a problem if you know where the studs are, usually 16" on center.

+1 one number 12 wire and use a 15/20 T-slot plug and put it on a 20 amp breaker and that should pass inspection too plus gives you twenty amps rather than 15 (not rated at 80%) and use that particle board shit with the big pieces of wood and paint it white especially if you using flourescent light and its a garage not a living room even if you do live in it most of the time lol btw you should get a ford small block block and make a glass table of it looks really nice lol

just hang some blankets off the walls and build a fire pit in the center of the floor. ;)

check out garagejournal.com. lots of information and good ideas there. Dont underestimate good lighting either.

Most of my outlets are on a single circuit, controlled by a wall switch near the personnel door. Makes it easy to shut off everything (except the pool pump, mini fridge and lights).

If Your house is attached in any way to the garage, make sure that wall gets a double layer of drywall or get 1 hour fire rated drywall.

Its a just in case cheap protection.

Drywall in a garage? I like the peg board. The drywall is quieter, if you are hiding the shriek of your angle grinder from the neighbors.

put a kidd heat detector in you garage and wire it to all of your smoke detectors in your house you may have to switch them all to the same brand but its assurance all it needs is a unswitched source of 120v and run a 3wire loomex to all your smokes and heat detectors if one goes off they all go off.

My detached shop is drywalled....hate it. All the seams and joins are coming apart/ tape falling off. My old shop at my previous house had 7/16" OSB on the walls painted white. That was the cats ass.

Drywall is just too fragile for a shop that gets used.

Planning on running #12 anyways. Already figured of make the plugs 20amp circuits. planning on using nail plates anywys for extra insurance against a wire piercing.

Going to change the original ceiling light box with a ceiling fan rated box, plan to run a second ceiling fan box 6'-8' further back in the garage in line with the first box and install a couple combination ceiling fans with lights for air circulation within the garage.

Approximately 5' to the left and right of the center line of the garage I plan on using 2 8' fluorescent fixtures with them centered on the front-to-back center line of the garage. These lights will be off a separate switch from the combination lights/fans.

Plan on using a duplex box to accommodate 2 receptacles (4 plug holes) per box spaced every 4' on center around the garage. The drywall on the garage side of house/garage wall will be removed due to multiple holes, insulation checked and replaced if needed and recovered.

Still on the fence about the wall covering, actually thought about using tongue and groove plywood lengthwise, covering it with a light coat of plaster and than hitting it with the texture coat gun.
