I just finished the m5od swap on my 90 ranger 4.0 4x4, it sounds like it is rattling, very faint but can be heard driving down the road, sounds like metal on metal. When i put the pilot bearing in the haynes manual:temper:said it could either go in the flywheel or the crank, i put mine in the crank. I am thinking i f**ked up and it should of went in the flywheel, just wanting to make sure. Also when i put the tranny in reverse and let off the clutch it the rattling get alot worse, only in reverse though. If the tranny is shot i have a warrenty on it so it would be going back, just wanted you guys thoughs on this. Thanks

Yup, you F'd up.

Only 1983-84 2.8Ls with TK4 and TK5 transmissions have the pilot bearing in the crank.

Sorry for the bad news; the transmission (or engine) has to come out again.

would that cause the rattling in reverse as well, also do u think the truck would make it til saturday driving about 30 miles a day.

I wouldn't drive it until you can put the pilot bearing in the flywheel.

When you go to put the pilot bearing in the flywheel, you will find the hole is way to big (if you are converting from an auto trans). If this is the case you need to get a used sleeve which presses into the flywheel, then the pilot bearing presses into the sleeve. The pilot bearing in the crank is too far away from the pilot shaft on th M5OD trans and does not support it.

i was going to put it in the flywheel then changed my mind, the hole is not to big, it should be a tight fit, i dont see where the hole would be bigger if converting because it is a manual flywheel in there. If i am missing something here let me know

Where did the old one come from? Because that is where the new one should have went.

um no. There is no "pilot bearing sleeve" for the flywheels. If you are converting from an auto to a manual trans, no matter what you have to use a manual transmission flywheel.

Not in 1986 there wasn't. But later flywheels DO have a bushing between the flywheel and pilot bearing. Reman flywheels don't usually come with it.

lol. No. Both flywheels I got for a '97 Ranger NEVER came with a bushing for the pilot bearing. The '03 Ranger I swapped out manual flywheels on didn't have a bushing either (changed flywheels instead of resurfacing when swapping clutches).

Umm, those flywheels also have 8 bolts instead of 6. They are different beasts.

You seem to think I've never put a pilot bearing in an RBV flywheel. Yes, some of them, particularly from the vintage at hand, DO have bushings. This is a 1990 4.0L. It looks a LOT more like my early 1991 than your 1997.

aright, i am gathering that i will not need the bushing for the flywheel then since when i was going to put it in the flywheel it would of been nice and tight, tight enought where i would have to hammer it in there.

since it is comming out, i used the old flywheel bolts cuz i am cheap, should i bother replacing those with new one or is that something that should matter, i seen on here that you all say to replace them, nebody use the same bolts from the auto flywheel to the manual
