Pen Making & Sales Ideas

If you're going to drop any reasonable amount of money on something of quality, then you expect to pay for it. If someone tries to sell you a "fresh rebuilt" motor for $200 you're going to gloss over it. If you see the same listing for $1200 then it sounds legitimate. It isn't always about the lowest price, and if people are gawking and walking away then it's the wrong market.

In school I knew a kid who would turn brass cigarette holders and sew leather wraps for them. Just like in the old B&W movies. He spent MAYBE $10 per holder, and would sell them back home in NY over summer break for around $100 each. You've got to identify your market and sell to it. Cummins_Ranger is spot on, none of us are going to buy one but there are people who would totally take them for $100.

Ok, so when you talking about finding the market, what does a person do to find the right market? Like I've said previously where I live its a give me this and that free state, so absolutely no luck here locally. Online is my real only option really. But how to I get them visible in that right market though?

Afraid he's right. Jack up the price for some fancy lawyers and such see what happens. If the price is to low they won't sell cuz its "cheap junk". Without a name if its to high its just a "quick buck deal". So your fountain pen for 25 sell for 40. And for 50 sell for 60. Only till your name gets out there. Then you can raise them again. Right now your a no body but 40$ ain't to much. And 60$ for a flashy pen is cheap considering some prices.

Those prices also say I'm cheap but ill last. Of course your stuff isn't going to sell to everyone. Only certain markets. And in that market your a nobody. Until your somebody your gonna have a rough time selling. You need to sell at what YOU think your pens are worth. That says something to. Tough times don't last tough people do.

It might be rough but I wouldn't be surprised to see your pens in an ad somewhere eventually. I think you've got a gold mine.

At my old job (atk) each building ran 24/7 with 60ish people in them. So like 600 people a day worked. And I always heard about how they wish they could find a smooth writing durable pen. We used pens all the time. Some people had upwards of 10 pens. And like 10/60 people had that many pens.

Might be hard to do. But maybe consider finding someone you trust and sending them samples to sell? I still have contacts at atk and they have job boards for baby sitting, car work, you name it. Could have them post there for you.

This right here:

Take a trip to your local Dr, Lawyers, higher end businesses in your area with samples. (call in advance to set up a meeting). Doubt you'll find a high end client on ebay or CL.

Thanks everyone. If anyone is interested in my craigslist ad here's a link: http://boise.craigslist.org/hsh/4263463465.html. If someone in the business sector wants me to do a sample set please send me a PM, and I'll work on it here in the next couple weeks. This payday my check isn't going to be much, so it will be middle of the month by the time I can get over to the store and get the kits.

Right now I'll do what I can to get some kits put together and get them out to these companies...swynx you mentioned ATK, I could send you some sample pens here later this month if you or anyone there is interested please PM me if you wish to help.

Thanks again everyone. Trying to broaden my horizons, but I don't want to just make one type of pen that nobody wants, I want to make what style is popular with most potential customers. I personally like the slim-line, and the fountain pens, but not everybody wants those. So like I've been saying I want ideas from everyone so I know which way to go LOL, give me a map guys LOL.

I actually have quite a few business connections. I can ask Teresa at the bar. She owns 3 bars. I can sample some at atk. My girlfriend has it in good with her boss who runs a daycare for the local hospital. My buddy works for Joe yochum who has alot of construction related persons including electrical. They might buy some carpenters pencils. Ill ask my buddy justin and jake they are setups at atk.

Ill ask them if they would have any interest. If so you can send samples?

Absolutely, if they are interested let me know, and I'll get my whip crackin' on myself to get some samples out. That would be awesome. Thank you.

The price range depends on the fountain pen kit that is ordered. The one that's in the picture is the $50 variant because a tenon has to be cut on the cap of the pen to hold that decorative ring. The $25 variant you are speaking of is just the standard pen with the decorative ring just being pressed into the end of the pen cap as the other styles of pens are.

I can do the latter for $25 shipped. The higher end $50 pen is $45+$5 shipping. However that kit is for some reason much higher priced due to the extra lathe turning maybe, not really sure how these stores come up with their prices sometimes either LOL. Some fountain pen kits are over $30 and that doesn't include the wood blanks, so you can see how these pens can go up in price. Take a look around the internet at fountain pens sold by brand name companies, some fountain pens are in the $1000+ price range. So I think $25-50 for a hand-made pen is pretty reasonable. However, this is exactly my issue everyone wants stuff for free, they don't understand the behind the scenes expenses, or the time to make these, yes, it can take as little as 15 minutes but you have to cut the wood blanks, glue in the brass tubes, trim the ends of the blanks, etc. To me all I'm trying to do is make the money back I spend on buying the pen kits and the materials for the most part, plus a little bit in profit or its not worth the trouble.

The price on the $50 pen kit is $32 alone, add in shipping, time, assembly, and lathe work and you got a $50 pen that can actually sell for a lot more than I am asking. However, you can see the troubles, doesn't matter what price you ask someone is always going to ask why xxx cost more than xx, etc.
So if you are interested please send me a PM and I'll send you my paypal info.

I hope you didn't see my response as me trying to tell you they were over priced. If so, I truly apologize. That was not my intent. You could make a pen out of solid gold, that writes in baby panda blood, and I couldn't wrap my mind around paying $50 for it, as I lose pens so easily, it would kill me to lose it.

I believe your pens are worth every dollar you are asking, and maybe more to someone that can afford them. I simply asked why every other pen had a firm price, and the fountain pens had a $25 variance. You answered it, and I appreciate it.

No offense taken, I was just using your response as an example of what I always hear. However, that just tells me wrong market area. I understand the losing pens thing, that's why I personally buy dollar store pens LOL, if I lose them I don't feel so bad. Now if I had the
Platinum Izumo Yagumonuri Fountain Pen priced at $960 and I lost it, I'd be slightly pissed off.

There are people who do use exotic expensive pens, as a way to show their wealth. Not necessarily helps their writing style, they just most likely work in an atmosphere where they are signing important documents, etc. and want to show their pens off. I mean if you are spending a million bucks on a house and your sales agent pulls out a 99 cent pen it would look pretty ridiculous. Although maybe I'm wrong but I'd think someone that high into the real estate market would have better writing instruments than dollar store stuff...then again maybe not where I live, I think here they still use stone tablets with chisels :icon_rofl:.

I completely understand what you are saying. I appreciate the response, and like I said I posted here to get information, advice, criticisms, etc.

Constructive critisizm. What you asked for

Yep I appreciate it, I'm trying to make and sell a few as a hobby, and like I said anything you guys can do to give me ideas and such is of great use to me.
