1984 ranger 2wd. 2.3 tk4. 75000 miles. my pcv valve fell off i while ago so i plugged the vaccuum to it. i wanna know if im killing my gas mileage by doing so. it is carbed so i know im not gonna get great gas mileage. also i have no cat, because its 25 years old and therefore is only a safety. is there an 02 sensor on this? also is not having the fresh air pump installed killing my mileage. what can i do to get better mileage beside switch to efi?

deleting the PCV system will reduce mileage. it will also reduce the service life of your engine oil. get the PCV system hooked back up. removing the cat will not effect mileage. the smog pump is there to feed the cat, so since the cat isnt there, the air pump doesnt need to be either.

ok i will get a new pcv valve tomorrow. im not sure what kind of mileage cause i havent used a full tank of gas yet, and i do alot of city driving. and me reving to 3500 doesnt help gas either. ive filled up at 2.00 a gallon and it took 30 bucks to fill it. ive gone 100 miles and have a little more than half a tank. also is there an oxygen sensor on an 84? if there is. its probably shot by now.

update on pcv

ok so the pcv valve is hooked back up. my carb has been loose for the longest time now, and ive tightened it so many times but could not get it 100% so i took the carb off and found the 4 screws that hold the baseplate on were loose. so i took them off and red loctited them. then i found 3 broken vaccuums so they are fixed. and my mixture screw was nearly falling off, so i leaned it out till the engine started to stumble, then i backed it out till it evened out. then my vaccuum advance was loose so i tightened that, and advanced my timing. i was only clocking 13.333 miles to the gallon. so now lets hope i improve it to about 20. im also putting new motorcraft plugs in tomorrow. ive already done wires and a cap. but i am going to do them again plus a rotor because the truck has sat for a while and there cheap enough so i will just do them. cant beat 30 bucks for everything. is there anything else i can do to improve my mileage?

Proper tire inflation will help mpg. Try changing the air filter. I'm not sure about the 2.3 carb, but to adjust the mixture screws on mine, you turn them all the way in(not too tight, so you don't damage the seats) then turn them out 1 1/2 turns and start from there.

this would be what i have done. i turned the mixture screw all the way in, prob about 5 or 6 full turns, then when the engine would stumble, i turned it back out ever so slightly just to even it out. i had to turn my idle up quite abit. now i have new motorcraft plugs. new wires. new cap, and new rotor. my tires are aired to 32 psi. my air filter is fairly new. im gonna do a real cold air intake soon, from scratch. and in the near future, change to a 5 speed instead of a 4. my theory is, i gotta drop it to do a clutch, why not swap?

Could be a transplant...those parts are easily swapped between engines and the original may have been cracked (which happens quite a bit)...were the wires connected to anything?

It's usually easier to just leave a part like that in place than to yank it out and fill the hole with a suitable bolt...

you can throw up all the BS flags you like. no carbed ford vehicle (and as far as i know, no other manufacurer) uses an o2 sensor. a carb is a self contained fuel metering device. it has no use for, nor can it adjust according to, an o2 sensor. if your truck has an o2 sensor, it was added after the factory at some point.

i can take a pic if you like. im the second owner and the truck has 78,000 miles and its all original. it was wired to the big electrical box on the pass inner fender. it was factory.

A pic would be nice...interesting...I've seen and worked on plenty of carbed setups and I've honestly never seen an O2 sensor on any of them...but if you've got a pic of it that might help clarify things...
