I have a 2004 4.0 Ranger FX4, I was looking at my air filter and noticed some oil in the tube between the filter and the throttle body. I did a little research and found that the oil in that tube can be caused by the PCV valve being plugged. When I checked the PCV it wasn't even in the hole on the back of the valve cover? What a PITA to change the PCV, I had done the change before, but I forgot hoe awkward it was. My question is the PCV has high spot so it looked like it should twist in and be snug on the back of the valve cover. Mine just slid in the hole what is it missing, a matching notch or was there an insert in the hole to hold the PCV in??

If you got oil in the intake with the PCV unhooked you likely got bigger problems.

I think the gromment just holds it in...yours is probably worn out. Athough im not super famiiar with the SOHC 4.0

I have a K and N copy air filter, so some oil is in the filter. I read some place that said if the PCV is plugged it will cause oil to be in the pipe to the air cleaner. It might have been on a video on You tube, not sure. I saw another video online that the guy recording said he used black sealer to hold the PCV valve in, I've checked, and a new valve cover is almost $100. The motor is new because I had a remanufactured motor installed a few years ago.
