My Pcv system is not working correctly. I need to replace PCV Valve but can't find it. I have also heard that this engine has an oil separator. Does it have bit the Pcv valve and seperator, or one or the other? I have also heard this seperator part is a discontinued one. Can it be cleaned/serviced and reinstalled? Any help is much appreciated. By the way it is an 87 ranger with the 2.3 in it.

Your 2.3 engine has both a PCV and a small oil separator. They are connected just under the intake manifold and you should be able to see the PCV sticking out somewhere in spaces between the first and second cylinders of the intake. This, on fuel injected system, connects up to the air intake on the Throttle Body and pulls the air in for burning in the combustion.

The separator is not much more than a tin can with a divide inside to try to allow oil that is thrown up to drop back down into the pan...and typically works fine...unless there is excessive pressure inside the engine that causes the oil to vaporize. This usually results in excessive oil burning...

If the PCV is not working properly it is a simple enough thing to change and inexpensive enough that it won't set you back too much...if you've never changed it...it won't hurt to change it now...it may help.

I guess, having said all that, that it might be a good idea if you could maybe elaborate a bit more if possible...like what makes you say the PCV is not working correctly...are you getting excessive oil useage, burning oil, or oil coming out of the dipstick?

Blow-by is a common problem with these engines, especially when they are high mileage...and there is no actual easy fix if the problem is with wonky rings...although the engine can last several thousand kilometers with minor oil consumption issues, environmental laws and emission laws tend to be a bit expensive even if you don't have to do emission testing in your area...a burning oil cloud will attract unwanted attention quite effectively...trust me...:)

Thank you for your reply
I know my Pcv needs to be changed just for the fact that the truck is almost 30 years old and I'm sure it needs changed. My 2.3 is losing a lot of oil and I realize it could be the rings. I'm just trying to do the small stuff first. I have noticed the hose going from the top of valve cover to to the throttle body always has fresh oil in it. I als know that I have small oil leaks in different areas such as the oil sensor and somewhere around the oil seperator. I know that a bad Pcv can build up pressure and push oil out different areas. Just need to get in there and find the damn thing. I see the hose that comes from underneath the intake and goes down to the oil seperator. However I don't see a Pcv anywhere online with this.

Fair enough...hopefully it helps.

I suspect there may have been some modifications to that part of it...but I also remember not being able to see the on on my 96 without some body contortions and different angle views...but it was there on my truck and I decided not to play with it simply because I was tracking down an error code...and that was a possible source of the error misfire/rough idle.
