84 2.3 oil leak PCV issue??

hmmm, isn't that just putting a bandaid on the problem, not really fixing it? wont it still blow out gaskets?

Not really a band aide...if you look inside the older valve covers they often have no baffle around the filler cap...so any pressure pushes the oil outside more readily...the FI valve covers have a sort of double baffle (mine does) and when the vent hole is open and filtered there is less chance the oil will gush out into the breather...

But if there is enough pressure and the oil is not draining back into the block easily enough then whatever oil is sloshing around up top can be forced out...

I had thought mine was blowing out for the same reason yours is...something was plugged...I didn't try running a coat hanger down the oil drains in the head...instead I put in a degunker that also seemed to help...

At some point I was only able to correct this by changing out the block because between the hole in the piston and the wonky rings there was just too much pressure inside the engine...

so, i guess i should probably make a junkyard run then, will any 2.3 efi valve cover fit? and i'll obviously grab the oil cap with it too... where would u get one of those little air filters?

i came up with an idea, you know those oil catch cans? how about i rig one of those up directly from my oil cap to my air filter. the oil will collect in the catch and i just put it back in the engine when it fills, and the fumes will go through the catch to be reburned through the hose heading to the airfilter yet the oil will sit in the can , will i need to get one of the efi valve covers to do this with the sealed oil cap? heres my little illustration:

tell me what you think

I tried a collector bottle on mine at one point...but to have that much being pushed out (I got mostly foam) indicates a problem...

As for the collector can on the filler cap...that might work better, but remember that if you get spillage from that...time to look at other solutions...like a replacement engine...

Mine actually ran for a long time with the spewing oil problem...as long as I kept topping it up and didn't let it run dry it was fine...and it ran dry at least twice...the second time was the killer though...it was -30* and I stopped once to top up the oil...and figured it would last till I got home...it didn't...

its spewing too much just to keep topping it off so i'm going to give this a try and if this doesn't work, then i guess its time for a new engine

since i soaked the oil filler cap in gas, it cleaned it apparently and its not really spewing out the cap like it was, now its spewing out the damn dip stick :annoyed:

Yes...that's what mine was doing...maybe a clogged drain from the head???

there is way too much pressure in the bottom end...you might have a cracked piston or really wonky rings...

Have you done a compression test on it? That will give you an idea if the problem is one cylinder (a cracked piston) or whether the rings are shot...

no, i havent had it tested...
