The last post in that thread had a guy retaining the stock ECU and doing the duraspark.

If I knew it would work that way, I would do it.

Light surface rust, but should be good to go.

A wire brush and can of black paint should help out.

Luckily it hasn't seen any harsh winters. Maybe a little salt in it's life, but not much.

I ordered a carb rebuild kit and a new coil pack that should arrive today.

I am also going to replace the starter solenoid. The one on it has 4 terminals I believe. It doesn't seem to want to crank right.

The local O'reilly has a Motorcraft one that I'll probably pick up.

Starting to look over the carb to disassemble tonight.

I made a little more progress last night.

I got my carb rebuild kit and got it off and cleaned up.

It appears someone either disassembled or tried to rebuild it before me.... They weren't very successful.

I found the top gasket to be broken, could explain why it could have had a fuel leak at one time from the carb.

I also put the new coil on last night too. The trick today will see if I can get it to run.

On another note, was looking under the hood and found a date stamp on the firewall.... I assume this is when it was made. Thought it was pretty cool it has survived over 30 years....

Made some progress this weekend and replaced plugs, wires, coil, condenser, distributor cap, and rotor.

I have confirmed I have spark, but it is not running.

I believe I have a timing issue I'm trying to work through....... I will report back when I figure out more.

Finally got it running today! With the great help of the people of this forum. See the below thread.

Can't Get '85 2.8 to run

Im having trouble getting the 2.8 in my B2 running. It seems like it wants to start, but just won't do it. I have cleaned and rebuilt the carb. I was a little off on float adjustment, but believe i have since fixed it. I know the fuel pump is working. It fills the carb bowl up. So this leads...

Now onto other issues that are taking priority.

1) Fix my wiring issue for the RUN position of the ignition switch. I think a new ignition switch will fix the problem.

2) I have discovered a pretty bad transmission leak. I'm guessing it is the front seal is displaced or a like is busted. I'll have to dig in more to take a look. If it is the seal, I'll pull the trans and replace the rear main seal of the engine and one on each end of the trans.

Any advice on dropping the trans or seal replacement is welcomed!

I drove the BII for the first time in 6 or 7 years today.

I only made a lap up and down my street due to a pretty bad trans leak, but it sure made me feel good.

Brought back so many memories! I had to run it with a jumper wire for now, but i was shocked to find that after running for a bit, the radio started working, the digital clock by the map light in the ceiling started working, and all my gages started working again. So those are all good signs!

Need to update this a little bit....

I found out why it wouldn't start and none of the accessories worked, In the ignition switch the contact blocks (not sure what they are called) were separated. Got it cleaned up and fixed and it started right up and all my gauges radio and clock on the ceiling worked!

Now onto my transmission leak... I believe it is the front seal to the transmission. I currently have it pulled into my garage and I am working on it when time allows. I need to disconnect some transmission lines and then the bell housing bolts and the cross member and out it should come!

I continue to work on it.

I did have a buddy who dad is retired and does body work and paint give me quote to get the dents repaired and painted -- $1200 for everything supplies included. I thought that was fairly reasonable. I'll probably get that done this fall.

It is coming together, but slowly.....

Are you sure its an a4ld? IIRC the 84 came with a C5 ( 3 speed auto ). The earlier years a4ld trans lockup you can control with a spst switch. No need to keep the cpu.

Nope starting in 85 Ford went to that A4LD mess...apparently too many C5's were working too well so they had to computerize the transmission and add overdrive to add multiple failure points . My 84 Ranger had the C5 did great towing a 14' camp trailer all over the country.

So you were asking if it had an A4LD. So I just said it did have an A4LD in 85. Which I didn't even realize until I got my 88 B2 that the A4LD was put into use year after my 84 Ranger was built. I didn't think they went to the A4LD until the late 80's. The C5 was a much better transmission though...at least in my 84 Ranger it proved to be much better, at least never had one fail...unlike the 93 Ranger that ate 2 A4LD's and my 88 B2 that's on its first rebuild.
