Im rebuilding my 96 ford ranger xtra cab. my dad works at napa and they got that car paint spray can stuff. now i wanna just paint my truck with that with a gloss black or a flat black. i wanna do a really descent job on it and take my time on it. any sujestions? like sanding it? primar? paint? how many layers? painting enviorment? please get back to me.

rattle can painting is really, really hard to make it look good. best way to do it is to use flat paint as it doesn't show the spray overlap nearly as much as gloss.
prep is the key to any paint job. everything is filled, leveled, sanded, rinsed, sanded again, etc. starting with a good self-etching primer after the body work is done, then going to a smooth primer after the sanding and leveling. cleaning everything with a paint prep thinner, then the paint. again, you really need a good paint gun, compressor, and place out of sun, wind, dust, etc. to make it look descent.
then lots more sanding between coats of paint, going to finer and finer grits of sand paper as you go. next you start the clear coat process. and after a few weeks work, you're done!

actually, you really should go the library and get a couple of books on body work and painting so you know what all is involved. it is way more than i just related to you.

but, as with everything else, time, patience, and persistence will get the job done for you.
good luck!

strvger is right but there is more to it. and it takes time to get a quality job. i would never paint a car/truck with rattle can because of the quality of it. i have a booth that we use and thats what i paint in but before we had that we made a makeshift booth out of plastic drop cloth, and pvc pipe. worked good.

It's hard to say what it will take without seeing your truck to get a good job on it but here are the basics of doing it right...

1. for painting sand with nothing coarser than 320 Grit
2. for primer 180 should be the limit anything more and it's an over kill
3 Your dad works for Nappa. Get some Martin Senour Automotive base coat.
4 don't take off more paint than you need to. Factory paint is great for adhesion.
5 if you go through while sanding prime it.
6 if you prime it, block sand it.
7 use Seal coat before you paint it (Rubber Seal has some good stuff cheap)
8 Get some Clear Coat again (Rubber Seal has some good stuff cheap)
9 Get basecoat..
10. Enjoy a new shiney paint job!
