P0455 after changing fuel pump

So I changed my fuel pump assembly last week because my fuel gauge working. After about 100 miles or so the engine light came on with the P0455 which I see is fuel system related. I am assuming it most likely has something with one of the lines from the tank. I checked the gas cap just to make sure, hoping I don't have to pull the tank off again but everything looked good and all the lines "clipped" into their spots on the new sending unit. Any thing I should check or change without taking the bed off?

What year? What engine and trans?

That is a EVAP code. That is the system that handles the fumes from the fuel tank. It tests for leaks all the time, and if it thinks there is a leak, it will set a code. It also has a valve that opens to the engine at certain times and lets the engine suck the fumes in to burn them.

Sorry, it’s a 2004 3.0, 2WD extended cab. I am aaauking based on the timing it’s more than likely something at the fuel pump. I reset the code and just drive it about 30 miles and it hasn’t come on again yet

I should also note, I did lower the spare tire because one of the bed bolt clips broke off so I was trying to get a set of channel locks on it. One of the videos I saw said the emissions canister sites in the area of the spare tire...

Don't know how finicky some Fords are (sorry mine's a Gen 2 - so no ODB2 issues) - but I had a GM that if you even cracked the gas cap it threw an evap UNTIL you took her to the pump and filled it up.. it basically was sooo damn prissy you couldn't touch the fuel system unless you were "fill 'er up" time. Since you reset it and it hasn't come back I would also counter that you can make it go away by filling the tank full after touching the system.

(I found this out because my hide-a-key is in a locking combo gas cap... every time I have to access that key I immediately have to go straight to the pump and top off.)

I've had the evap code on just about every vehicle I have owned (mostly Ford/Lincoln) I just reset it and most times it stays off and if it doesn't, I just reset it again lol.

I reset this one and so far so good but it's only been less then 100 miles. My main concern it is my sons vehicle and he is just getting his license and it is his first vehicle. I would like to not have the CEL on constantly, that way in case something else pops up he will know to check it or let me know.

If he has enough money to put gas in the tank, make him buy a cheap OBD2 scanner and teach him to use it...and never drive with the light on unless you know exactly why. Basically a requirement of driving a modern vehicle anymore. Doesn't have to be a $400 complete computer tool, just the cheapie.. Autel is a good brand. I bought an "Autel" off the fleebay, turned out to be a knock off/not genuine. A genuine Autel from the Autel store on amazon can be had for $20.

May seem like an extravagance to have several of the same tool, but every OBD2 vehicle I drive has its own scanner in it.

I haven't put to many more miles on the truck but so far after several short trips the light has stayed off. So I am assuming/hoping it was just something related to the hoses and cap being off.

I guess I should have kept my mouth shut yesterday, as luck would have it, next drive the light kicked back on, same code. What are the first things I should do or check without having to take the bed back off. I was careful making sure everything snapped into place when putting the new fuel pump in. Is there anyway to do any type of leak test to see where a leak might be. Just so you know I drove about 200 miles since I last turned the light off before it came on again, if that makes a difference. I have not added fuel or anything so the gas cap has not been off of it.

Also curious, one of the videos I watched the guy said the 0455 code is a "gross" leak meaning it is a major leak like the system is completely open has has no pressure, instead of a slight leak. Does anyone know if the code in my 2004 is like that or would any leak no matter how small or large throw this code. My gut tells me its not a major leak or it would have came on shortly after I reset the light the last time.

is the gas cap tight? ... no seriously, check the EASY stuff first before the insane hard stuff.

my ex used to turn the cap until it clicked once, put up with shutting off her light 5 or 6 times before she finally got the message to really tighten the hell out of it or risk driving with a live grenade because I wasn't going to keep turning off her light for her.

I've never done it, but supposedly you can check the whole fuel system with a smoke machine. Usually just a quick inspection for me has found some gross issue (usually the fuel filler neck rubber has croaked) without having to buy yet another expensive tool.

I checked the gas cap and thought that was the fix. After I changed the fuel pump the light came on. I re set the light, checked the gas cap and it didn't come back on again until now, a couple hundred miles later. My neighbor is a mechanic and I think he has a smoke machine for leak test.

That's why the smoke machines starting getting so popular. They make it easier to find these leaks. The newer computers have what they call a "drive cycle". Certain codes take time to turn the light on.

If you live in one of the bigger cities with smog inspections, they will not pass your vehicle if when they hook their scanner up and the computer hasn't completed it's "drive cycle". That is so you can't clear the code to get the light off and then go in and get your sticker.
