overheating problem

My dad had a 1999 Ranger with the 3.0 and it would do the same thing and we finally changed the head gaskets and it fixed the problem. So I would say you have a blowed head gasket.

Most people overlook those fan clutches. I bought an RX7 once dirt cheap because I thought I had to rebuild the engine (rotary motor was overheating) when it was just the fan clutch not spinning fast enough when it needed it. Got one on ebay for 20 bucks and doubled my money on the car!

the block and intake and stuff SHOULD. idk for sure.. the thing is, the 96 was obdII, i don't think that would affect the motor tho. just the wiring and sensors and junk. just use all your wiring and sensors.. do some more research is all i can say. $300 wouldn't be bad if it was rebuilt. find out what all was rebuilt. was it machined? crank turned or replaced? or was it just broke down and cleaned...

to have a 4.0 block done in Memphis is $600 and the heads are $75 each. so the fact that he said the machine shop cost was $400 seems suspicious to me.

well me and my dad were looking at my truck and i started up and now it runs fine we are goin to replace the water pump

Fan clutch will not make anchor overheat on the highway... It is not possible... Driving in traffic, absolutely!

What wpuld make the truck feel like it has a miss or studder at low rpm

A miss or a stutter could do that to ya...

What could cause a miss or a stutter though? Bad plugs, bad fuel, dirty air filter, bad o2, bad timing, dirty injectors...

The plot thickens.........
If that engine was rebuilt it was rebuilt years ago and stored. Those heads look rusted on the INSIDE on the springs and seats to me from the pics.
That means leave it where you found it and look else where IMHO. Rings are more then likely rusted too.

You have a blown head gasket. Exhaust pressure is building up enough pressure to lift the radiator pressure seal in the radiator cap. You can try the thermostat but in the meantime I would start shining up your wrenches and get ready to take the heads off. Get them checked for cracks and checked for flatness. Buy some new head bolts. Don't re-use the old ones as they are stretched. Get Fel-Pro gasket set, they are the best. If the heads are flat and not cracked you may want to get the valves checked and replace any freeze plugs since they have a habit of corroding on that engine.
