overheating problem

how do you install it? get a haynes book...

1. while truck is cool, take the radiator hose off the water neck that is in the middle of the motor under the throttle body.
2. take the water neck off. its 3 bolts.. 8mm heads i think.. when you move the water neck, the thermo is between the water neck and engine.

let us know.. we can always think of more ideas..

yea whats crazy it my truck ran great for a 4hr drive to cabin then playing around in mud at cabin and then the 4 hr drive home it was fine now today it just started acting up

Ahh, see you should have included that! Your radiator could be plugged with mud... Mine was, caused severe overheating!!

If you do the t-stat, make sure the new one goes in the right way, if it's backwards, you will still overheat!

My truck did the same thing....I had replaced a radiator hose & had an air bubble in the system--it took an hour of adding water to get it out of the heater core.
Like the guys said--make sure the thermostat is o.k.--put it in a pot of water on the stove & make sure it opens before the water starts boiling...and check the other stuff they suggested....

or you might end up blowing the new headgasket!!!!!

Well before you announced that it was a blown head gasket I was gonna suggest a bottle test. Thats where you pull the overflow line off of the overflow tank and stick the hose into a bottle of water say a gatorade bottle about 3/4 full of water. Crank the truck and let it idle and if you see bubbles blowing out of the overflow hose in the bottle then you can just about bet a head gasket failure. The more bubbles the worse the gasker failure is. I hate to hear that. Sounds like its time to take the heads off. I wouldnt run it anymore. Like someone mentioned earlier the radiator may be stopped up with mud which caused this problem. Hopefully its just a gasket failure and not a cracked head.

A blown gasket with a 1990 2.9L ?
Oh man.... I hope I'm wrong but I don't think they blow gaskets after over heating. I think they straight up crack heads. The new designs like the 90's are better by far then the 80's but I think they will still crack a head.

96 is probably OHC right? if so, i wouldn't wanna do the swap.. but don't quote me b/c i'm not for sure

SOHC in rangers weren't till the 2000's i forget exact year though
