Recently I was reading the write up by Jim Oaks on the explorer overhead console and decided to try it myself. I started looking on ebay, might check the junk yards too, for consoles. In the process of doing do I came across some expedition overhead consoles that looked good. I'm thinking of attempting that instead. The ones I'm looking at have the compass, climate controls, 2 compartments and lights. I was wondering if anyone has done this, or another overhead console? I'm not sure what I would do with the climate controls. Either replace them with gauges or lights, or replace the stock controls with gauges or maybe a power inverter/ports. Any ideas?

I need an O/H console for my '36 Ranger...I'll just replace the un-needed controls with air gauges---for my 4-wheel independent air shock set-up...

do to your console what works best for you....

I don't know how well the Expedition console will fit your truck. I'm not saying it won't, I just don't know that it will.

There are always a few Explorer ones for sale in the classified section here though.

Yeah I was thinking about that earlier, I'd like to get the measurements on one before I try it. Might be too long. Though I could move it back and replace my dome light with it.

I wonder if theres a mounting plate I need with the expedition console.

I bought the Exlpoder overhead console years ago and mounted it. It is a perfect fit. It took about 1 hour and 20 min. total to trim out the headliner and mount the bracket and console and then run the wires to get everything working. Digital clock and outside temp gauge look so good and work great. I have a place to put the garage door opener out of site as well. I like the setup!! You need to get the bracket that comes with it and the wiring. It all comes together. I have a buddy who bought the setup from and Expedition for his son's Ranger and he told me that it did not work out. He then went ahead and bought one from an Exlpoder and put it in. Perfect fit. If you can try it before you buy it do that first. Don't waste your money on something that might not work, Bro.

That's what I was worried about, the curve of the roof and length of the expedition console don't seem to match up well. I just like the idea of roof mounted climate controls. Plus more storage. Might look into other overhead consoles.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAha......exploder console......i have learneded from this thread....

thanks Zeisan & members.....

Like I posted above, I did mine years ago. I remember seeing better install instructions on this site awhile back and I thought I would search for them. The article is in our magazine section from 2008. This is much better instructions then I was going to post today. Mine are a bit fuzzy since my cats like to help take photos...lol!!!

Rep me for this someone....lol

An explorer console? I'm gonna go to some local yards tomorrow and see what I can come up with. Then I'll decide what I wanna do.

Just bought one for eBay and got it the other day. 50 bucks for whole unit, thermometer, bracket n complete uncut wiring harness

That's good, most of the ones I'm finding on ebay are missing those things.

Didn't one of the car companies have a modular overhead storage system?

I found a few on ebay out of s10s that looked good. But I really like the expedition ones.

ouch thats expensive. my local yard charges $10 for all with the sensor and brackets. I paln on pulling one to put into my ranger soon, maybe on thursday.
