would this be thermostat related????? im not getting the greatest of mileage
but heres the run down of whats going on........
basically this is what it does when thermostat isnt open yet
C___^___H

then when thermostat opens this is what happens....
C__^____H

this how it runs all day im a lil boggled by this.

I could use some much needed input

-thanks

don't pay attention to the gauge.

get an infrared thermometer and measure the exact temperature of the thermostat housing.

it should be at least 195 degrees and never drop lower.

I agree with Brutus. don't fo so much by the gauge in case itis not accurate.
That being said. Are you saying that when you start the vehicle cold it way down as low as it can be and as you warm it up it goes to the middle and then the t-stat opens and it goes down a little. if that is what you are saying it looks normal to me also as a poster said.

Russ! Thermostats don't "OPEN"! They fluctuate. If idleing they are open just a crack. Then when speeding up, burning more fuel, they open just a bit more. Then when under a load, such as a mountainous hiway, they open even more.
The factory gauge is calibrated so the driver won't get excited when the temperature goes up and down with the actual coolant temperature.
Since the only REAL temperature humans can relate to is the 212* of boiling water, we tend to think 200* is getting close to loseing our coolant.... NOT SO! Normal coolant with a normal radiator cap won't boil till about 245* is reached.
Your gauge seems about NORMAL to me.

ok it just seems a lil bit odd that it would be running so cool like that i used to seeing temp gauges being in the middle

Overcooling

Yes your thermostat would be a likely canidate. When a thermostat malfunctions it can either stayed closed and overheat or stay open and never reach operating temperature. Modern vehicles have what is called a temperature sensor that measures the temperature to change the fuel air mixture. Cold engines run richer, hence the excessive fuel consumption. The temperature sending unit is a switch that moves you temp gauge. Hope this helps.

shawn is right, although it sounds like it heats up then the thermostat reacts and it cools back off... as many have said above, temp gauges don't mean much, as long as it's not in the outer edges it's fine... they are never accurate and should be used as a rough guideline only... my mustang's always sat right at the bottom end of normal... i'll see if i can find a pic...

ignore the speedo, it's broken... this pic was taken many years ago... this is my 89 mustang volts top left, oil top right, gas bottom right, temp bottom left... that's where my temp sat all day long in the middle of the summer... and i had replaced the thermostat about 2 months prior to that pic i think...

no, it's your truck's themp gauge reading incorectly, OR, it could just be your spesific motor's personality... 98* is only an average for people... some people are warmer some are cooler...

the important thing is that it stays in the normal area... no big deal... did your truck always do this, or is this new?
