Our 84 Ford Bronco 2 4x4 build thread. From Junk to almost glory.

Ya it is a lot of new parts but if I decide to sell it (which I doubt I will) I need it to start with a key. Frankly I am to the point where I am liking it more and more. My dad has been looking a lot at 302 swaps but frankly it is getting hard to find a 302 in good shape around here and I need one for the mustang more.

I pulled the starter a while back to have it tested so before I install it I will check the ground connections. Really that is a huge possibility of all that is wrong because I do a lot of mudding with this truck.

If the alternator brushes are gone then I am going to just replace the entire alternator because frankly when the brushes alone go their is a lot of chances other things are bad too.

Just curious will an alternator off a 85 Ford Econoline 351W fit this truck? I have one from an econoline I stripped and have no need for it as my other trucks use a different alternator and I ended up getting rid of the motorhome that I could have used it on.

I don't know if they fit off the top of head. But it shouldn't be too hard to tell.

If the alternator still spins smoothly and quietly, I would seriously just replace the brushes. Once you take them out of the equation, all an alternator is wire on a shaft that spins. If it still spins, it will probably still work. The other reason is that alternators easily get to the $100 mark when brushes on reach the $10 mark. If it doesn't work after replacing the brushes, take them back or keep them for spares.

The alternator squeals a bit upon start up and has 300K+ miles on it (they used the alternator with the car when they swapped the new engine, trans and t-case). That and I personally don't have the patience to take the alternator apart and put new brushes in.
Orielly only wants $30 for an alternator so that isn't to bad considering I paid $100 for one for the 90 F150 I just got of course though that one came with a voltage regulator and lifetime warranty.
A quick look at O'rielly says they do fit so It looks like I have a spare one on hand already just going to bring it in and have it tested that way I know it is good before I go through the hassle of replacing it with a bad one. Going to try the voltage regulator and ground first.
If this doesn't fix it then I am at a dead lost.
By the way you should check out the ranger build thread. Here is the link: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151425
I could use your help on it sometimes being your is a 94 which is pretty similar set up to what I am doing to it.

Ya. At 300k, just replace it lol. I didn't realize it had that many miles. I hope the F150 one fits. Its nice when things work out. I'll take a look at the Ranger build shortly.

Yep this truck was beat up and put up wet then brought back to life then beat up some more then it came to me and it got beat up more and now I am slowly fixing it back to glory. LOL
Engine trans and tcase have 140K miles or so I believe. Ya it is especially since I got the van for free also! (should have kept the 351W and C6 auto trans it had and stuck it in the stang but I didn't have the stang then)
Thanks hopefully with as much work as you have done to your ranger you will know a bit more then me about the third gen rangers since obviously I don't know crap about RBVs still and I am obviously more knowledgeable in the full size department. LOL You probably can tell this on FTE.
