Okay so I bought a new truck, and it has axle code 44, so a 3.73 open diff...
My old truck which is destined for the wrecker most likely, has a d7, which according to the tech section is a 4.10 with a limited slip.

First, does anyone have details on the LS? Are they any real use, and of decent quality?

Second, is it worth my time to put the 4.10 LS into my new truck? It seems that an explorer axle is the best option, but more work, and means parts I dont have, and custom fab work...

Thanks.

They're not too bad, maybe even good if you rebuild them according to the write up in the Tech Library... Are both axles 7.5? If so, it should be easy to swap the axles and any gain in gearing is good.

I'm running 4.10 L/S w/31"/10.5x15 Baja Claws in the rear [7.5]and the front [d-28 L/S]of my b-II. Great in the snow for straight line. Can be tricky turning, especially on the side of a hill. I haven't been hard on them, seem to be just fine. They were great on the street for the week that the roads didn't get cleaned....I was delivering pizza.

i have a 3.73 LS in the 7.5 in my b2.....i used to follow by buddies CJ on 35's, locked F&R all over the place and mine was bone stock. seems like it worked well.

How does one tell if the front is L/S? I can check the back just by looking at the inside of the door...?

yeah, you can look at the code on the inside of the door, or you can look at the tag on the outside of the differential cover (held on by one of the cover bolts)

for example, a 3.73 open diff would just say 3 73

a LS diff would say 3L73

check out the tech library, go to the axles section and select the 7.5/8.8 article.....lots of good shit in there

just swap out a 4.10 set of 8.8/d35... i've had bad luck with the stock axles. mine are 3.73 open's...but i've still broke stuff..

The stock 4.10 l/s are free though...

Has anyone heard of the front being a LS?

ahhhh free... makes sense now.

Sorry, I should have said the front on mine is a home made L/S. There has been rumors of a factory L/S in certain years of Ranger, I think '87-88 was mentioned.

Well, it is an 88...

What did you use to make the homemade ls?

never heard of a d28 having a LS......you can put an extra shim in the spider gears and sometimes they'll act like a LS. in mind though, just buy a locker. a lockright goes new for ~$250 and used for even cheaper.

Not particularly interested in spending the money on locking a d28, that money is better spent on getting a d35 I would think... Just trying to figure out what I've got in the truck Im looking at wrecking...

yeah, i meant a locker for a d35

the only $$$ i'd throw at a d28 would go towards buying any tools i needed to purchase to remove it from my vehicle
