ok not sure where to post this so i guess this is close enough. I have a 92 ranger extend cab 4x4 and tying to install a 98+ one pieace driveshaft. but when i go to bolt it up to the transfer case the flange on the driveshaft it larger. bolts to the rear end just fine. so what can i do? do i need a flange off a 98+? will it even fit? or do i just get a custom u-joint thats larger on one side and smaller on the other side? thanks

Aluminum shaft?

Sounds like you may have gotten one that was replaced due to a recall on the truck's original shaft if it came from a '98-'00 truck (dumb bean counters at Ford apparently thought it was cheaper to replace whole shafts instead of properly re-greasing a slip-spline).

If you get the larger flange off the donor's T-case, it should then fit.

no its a steal one. i bought it off of here and now that you say it he said he recenlty lube up spline shaft and it appears to have a new boot on it. as far as finding a new flange i dunno i know the local junkyard had a 2000ranger 4x4 but i'm not sure if they will part it off the t-case. i think a new joint will problay be the easiest, cheapiest, and fastest way. i'm kinda at the point of no return.

The steel shaft off a 98 bolted right up to my 91 extended cab...weird.

yeah i thought it was weird too. it would just be my luck get the odd ball crap and try too put it together.

Something's weird for sure. AFAIK, only aluminum shafts came with the larger flange on both ends (same size as the axle flange). Sounds like someone may have taken the original small one off it and replaced it with the larger one.

Options are:
Get a new larger t-case flange,
Get a new smaller 1330 driveshaft flange,
Get a half-breed conversion u-joint (1310-1330) and use your original driveshaft flange.

yeah i think i'll just go with u joint idea be the fast way. i'll post pic of this that way you guys can see for yourself and tell me im not crazy. thanks for help guys

I was under the impression that any Ranger built after 2000 had the larger joint. My 2001 Ranger had a steel shaft when I bought it, Ford replaced it with the aluminum one per the TSB.

Therefore, wouldn't the steel shaft they replaced have had the larger joint?

Ford always replaced the t-case flange at the same time as the shaft.

Yea that was the shaft you got from me right? im i didnt take a tape to the flange to tell you it was the 3'' one. you can either get a combo u-joint or a larger T-case flange. i used a combo ujoint on my 94 when i installed my 2000 d/shaft.

yup its the one i got off you. no big deal i just assumed they were all the same size oh well. I went to napa today to see if they had any custom size u-joints and the one guy like i don't think they make custom size u-joint and i'm like yes they do i have one on my bronco. so if i get a custom size u-joint i'll have to go some place that know what the hell i'm talking about. also i'm going to the junkyard this weekend hopefully they still have that 2000 ranger and hopefully they will part it off and it's a 3" flange.

alright so let me get this straight before i go to jy. all the recalled shafts were replace with aluminum ones and others were steal. so if the truck at the yard has a steal one which i know it does it should have the 3" flange right? correct me if i'm wrong please.

'98-'00 trucks all had factory steel shafts, and will have a 2.5" front flange, and a 3" rear flange.

When some of these shafts were replaced under the TSB, the replacement shaft was aluminum with 3" flanges on both ends. The t-case output flange was replaced at the same time.

From '01 on ('02 on?) the trucks were then equipped from the factory with the aluminum shafts with 3" flanges.

I am not aware of any steel shafts having originally been equipped with two 3" flanges.
