The thought first came to me when I parked my Ranger next to an old 30's GMC panel truck. They seemed close in overall length and width.

The second time I thought of it was when I compared a model of the Ranger to a Model A pickup both in the same scale.

Then I did a little research. Here's the dimensions I found

2008 Ranger:
OAL 189.4 inches
OAW 69.3 inches (No mirrors)
Height 66.2 inches
Bed Width 40.5 inches between wheel wells
Bed Length 72.7 inches
Bed Depth 16.5 inches

1930's Model A pickup
OAL 159 13/16 inches (160)
OAW 53 15/16 inches (54) not including Fender Measurements
Height 69 1/2 inches
Bed Width 40 3/4 inches
Bed Length 55 inches (looks longer on the model)
Bed Depth 13 inches

And the link where I got the Model A dimensions

With the regular cab Ranger being longer yet shorter in height and possible the same width when the fenders of the Model A included in its measurements, I say they are really close.
Thank goodness we got more room in the cab.

Yes, trucks are steadily getting bigger. Compared to a Model A, a Ranger regular cab is roomy.

But the ranger existed long after the F150, 250, 350 were already a thing. It didn't go from Model A straight to Ranger. So at no point was the ranger a "full size truck". :dunno:

It was a package on fullsize trucks in the 70's and early 80's...

Years ago my former neighbor had a hot rodded '49 Chevy pickup. He was kind of short so it was no issue for him but I'm 6'1" and barely fit and my knees were in my chest.
"Dude, could you slide the seat back?"
"It IS all the way back."

It was a late night summary of various ponderings.

Yes trucks are bigger than they were before. I was just thinking what we consider compact now was considered full said back in the day.

Yup.

yes the ranger is a tiny truck but from my experience, many teenage ranger drivers suffer from FSTCS (full-size truck compensation syndrome), "is that trailer 8000lbs with a gooseneck? yup! can my ford ranger pull it? YOU BETCHA!
this is easy enough to spot in the wild, usually due to a 2''or more body lift with stock bumper mounts, a cherrybomb exhaust, fake beadlocks, a realtree camo sticker on the back glass and but not limited to a pair of truck nuts tastefully hanging from the trailer hitch. this is unfortunately not an endangered species

Don't forget the exhaust stack through the bed. ;missingteeth;

Hey man, if it fits it ships.

Have you been near a new ranger pickup? It seems as big as the old f150's. I heard when they were coming out with the new one, that some people wished that they would go back to the smaller truck size, but they didn't listen.

Not really that much bigger than an old Supercab, just fluffier.

About the same distance between the axles, a few inches wider... nowhere near the size of a fullsize until you get back to the 50's.

I just got a new Ranger Supercab and it is slightly narrower and the same length as my old Sport Trac.
