ive been asking and reading stuff about gears for a long time.

and seems like i have a good chance for gettin a gear set for my truck
as u know its a 2.5 5 spd rolling 30" tires with a 7.5" dif with 3.73 gears.

according to the new gear calculator my actual ratio is 3.41
the high ratio opton is 3.72, new ratio option is 4.08 and low ratio option is 4.45

a member here on TRS is selling a 4.10 gear set for a 7.5.
so, is this a good upgrade? will the 4.10 gear ratio give back some of the lost performance for bigger tires?
the loss is not that dramatical, but i can feel it, so i would like to know if the new gear ratio will improve my trucks performance.

also, what i need to do to install those, what do i need? besides the gear set of course.

thanks,
RSH :icon_thumby:

The 4:10 gears is a major upgrade from what you have now, these gears are good up to a 32" tire and still be good. Any bigger tire then you'll need another ratio.

The 4:10's will really wake up your 2.5. The accel will be quicker and you'll notice it once you get gowing thru the gears. My 94 3L had 3:45 gears when it was stock. When I did my lift over 10 years ago I had 4:10's put in to it. It was so much fun gettting to that point of over what you had. Even today my 4:10's still get my 3L up to speed and them some these days. I am happy with. In my 93 3L 4wd the 4:10's lag just a tad bit, but not enough to notice it.

To put them in you need all kinds of dials, special tools, etc...other words gear install is a pain in the ass. It's better to have someone who knows the job and let them do it.

thanks for the fast answer lol
so i could use em even with 31"s?
thats good to know :icon_thumby:
according to the gear charts and all that i found on the tech lyb the rpms will be higher, but nothing too high.
the 2.5 needs high rpms to give power anyway.
and yeah im really considering paying my mechanic to install them.

any more input is welcome

yeah it has decent torque, so it can stay on a gear even on small hills.
once im on open road i always use 5fth

another thing, this gears fit without replacing carrier and stuff right?

7.5 and 8.8 use the same carrier no matter on the gearing...

I think he means there is no carrier split with different gear ratios in the 7.5 and 8.8.

Oh yeah. Re-read that and could be taken either way. :icon_twisted:

oh
i assume he said that all 7.5 gears use the same carrier, as any 8.8 can use the same 8.8 carrier

yeah that :), was saying that neither the 7.5 or 8.8 have a carrier break...

i think im gettin cold on the gear stuff again, seems like its a really hard job to do(install them) and i cant find someone who does this around here...
not to mention that when i do found someone it will be expensive.
