Here's a strange one....while driving on express way and exiting, HUGE billows of oil smoke out the exhaust. drove around and smogged everyone in the neighborhood for a while...then POOF it was gone and has not come back. Oil level fine, no codes, running great, in fact it's getting 18+ MPG....I changed the PCV last night just because. But it had my attention for about 20 miles. Any other ideas ? ? No doubt it was engine oil from the smell

stuck valve or ring maybe?

do a compression test and look at the plugs and see if they are burning clean and even check the oil If everything looks good and you have oil pressure not much to do but drive it till it pukes

the smoke has returned and will not go away now......compression, all ok, idles fine, runs great, BUT it smokes too bad to drive, we went thru the upper end with al new gaskets, no change.....it does puff out the oil filler cap pretty thick too..... what do you think ??? is it time to pull the motor and either replace with reman or repair this one.

Yep!

That's the lower end.. Rings or pistons. Ya gota pull the engine to make them kind of repairs. I betcha the compression isn't the sme now as the last time you checked it.
I might just look around for a replacement engine if it was mine.. Not even bother pulling it apart if it had lots of miles on it.

thats what i am thinking.....we do have the ability and equiptment to rebuild it myself. I am thinking that this truck has had lower end issues all along....it has really done some strange stuff. Anyway thanks and the weekend will be a motor pull and tear down.
