oil pump drive gear question

My question is are all the 4.0 sohc oil pump drive gears pretty much the same? I looking at one on ebay and the application tool they use says the part doesn't fit my year engine but it will fit a 2004 so I cant believe that part is different when the 4.0 sohc blocks are basically all the same aren't they? part # F77Z-6A739-AA

The F7 at the start means 1997, that's when part was first used/designed(when 4.0l SOHC was first used in Explorers), but your right that part number only goes to 2004.
nothing for 2005
Then other listings for 2006-2008 and another for 2009-2011

It may be that the oil pump design or gear design was changed in 2004, there were timing chain issues on the '97-'04 SOHC engines, and the change wasn't complete in all SOHC engines until 2006 model year, so 2005 is the transition year, i.e. engines assembled before July 2005 is 1997 design, after July 2005 is the 2006 design, dates are a guess

You will need to call dealer and give them the VIN number to see if you have a 2004 design or 2006 design, that is my guess, and it is just a guess

I doubt anything on the outside of the engine that you can see will be helpful.

I would pull out the Oil pump gear and see if it has a part number on it.
