Oil pressure a tad low....

Up until a few days ago, my oil pressure gauge would be half-way up the gauge range as usual. But now my OPG would now show the oil pressure be a tad low. Now it's more like 1/3 up the range.

What could this mean? It's been a while since I changed my oil and I mean to do it when I get paid next time. What else could this be?

Thanx-

I wouldn't trust the idiot gauge...it really provides no useful information. If you are terribly concerned though, I would stick an inexpensive oil gauge on there and that will give you a more accurate reading. They aren't too difficult to install.

yeppers the factory gauge is set to like 7 psi at around 10 the gauge will read normal

sounds like your oil sending unit went south. It's nothing more than a switch, set to close and read normal at 8psi. At 8psi, your truck wouldn't run very long. Verify with a mechanical guage, and replace sender if you feel you should.

I just had a similar problem...oil gauge would slowly drop to zero after it
warmed up. After reaching full operating temperature, the needle would
start bouncing around, and sometimes go back to normal, or just stay at
0. I knew it was just an idiot gauge, but it still scared the bejeebers
out of me, watching it slowly sink. http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/images/smilies/shok.gif

In any case, replaced the sensor. The old one was full of oil inside the
connector housing, yet nothing leaking on the block side of things, so I
suspect the switch failed internally and was leaking. Replaced it today,
things look normal now.

This is now the 3rd switch this truck has had. Original had the 0 PSI reading
when cold, then would snap to normal after it warmed up. The 2nd one
was the one that just failed. It was an after-market part. Went ahead and
paid the $46 for a OEM sensor this time around.
