swapping a 91 motor in to a 85 the oilpan on the 91 is a alum. pan and the 85 has a steel but it wont work so will a oilpan from either a truck or a car with auto trans work. oh by the way the 91 is a standard and i dont think the pan from the 91 will bolt on with the auto trans anyone evry come across this before

ok i goofed and didnt say what motor WTF. i have a 85 ranger with a 2.3 in it with a auto trans and i also have a 91 ranger with a standard trans. the 85 motor has a steel pan and the 91 has a alum pan. i noticed that when i was swappin things out on the motors that the steel pan will not bolt to the 91 motor the gaskets are different and so are the rear mains on the motors. so what i was wondering if any one else has run across this before

I'm assuming you're going from a 2.8 to a 4.0?

OK, so 2.3 then. What tranny do you have in the truck you're putting the motor into? C5 or A4LD?

no both motors are 2.3s my 85 motor blew up on me and i have the motor out of the 91 and i have rebuilt it and thought it would drop in ha ha was i wrong have found quite a few differences all ready

dont get me tro lying to you i really dont do transmissions so not sure on the different models but it is overdrive the selecter goes P,R,N,OD,D,2,1 on the floor

i have run into this before you need to find a pan for a 91 auto then or switch to a 5 speed.

guess i am going to pull apart tomorrow damn. guess a pan from either a car or a ranger with a auto trans will work, this swap is starting to get a little nerve racking

did think about the swap to 5 speed but thats even more work and then getting a drive shaft made since the 85 is long bed and the 91 with the 5 speed is short bed

You've got an A4LD. Honestly I'd swap in the 5 speed you have. It is not really a hard swap and you wouldn't have to find another oil pan.

Edit, if you're gonna swap pans, try to get one from a truck...I have no idea if a car pan will work. My guess is that it won't.

well then i have to swap in the clutch pedal stuff and my son also drives the 85 and since he has never drove a clutch before i would soon be doing a clutch on it from him learning how to drive it i have 4 older kids and have already done that trick a time or two before lol

Gotcha...still easier and cheaper than rebuilding a trashed auto trans though! A4LDs will eat themselves if you abuse them.

well i will go to pull apart and see what i can learn thanks for the help and i am off to bed

the rear of the aluminum pan is all empty space, if you wanted to take a hack saw and cut it all up that should be fine... then the pans would be compatible

they put floor shifts on A4LD's? I know the C3 isn't an OD tranny, but don't know what auto they floor shifted that was an OD...

there is a big intake manifold change for the '91 engines, if you take the computer, wiring harness, dash and gas tank and a few other things it'll all work, but otherwise you'd have to change the head to use the old carbed stuff or make some type of custom adapter to bolt to the stock lower intake manifold from the '91
