hey guys whats all this talk about oil filters i keep reading here everyone says stay away from fram ect whats the differance i have been useing fram since i got my rang can someone tell me what i am missing here i never had a problem with fram thanks

Fram filters are installed and doing well in millions of vehicles as I type this. Guys have favorites that they like to post are better than others. They might even tell a horror story about this or that filter.
As I have grown older I have relied on JiffyLube and others to do my oil changes. Whatever they install is good enough for me.
In truth the modern engines are so well built that the filter hardly filters OUT much of anything at all. My Bobcat has a oil filter on it and I leave it in place for several years between changes.
The only real possible problem with a filter is the possiblilty of the pressure bypass opening too soon and allowing the oil pressure to lower. As far as FILTERING, all seem to do about the same job.

^ I agree! However, I'm sure in certain situations, a premium filter matters. Like in racing.

But for the most part. LIke most of us here...Frams fine. They work fine for me. Just keep that oil on a tight schedule..its the best thing you can do for that old 2.9! Regular maintenance is key.

I used a Fram the first couple times I changed my oil after getting my Ranger and when I put the specified 5 quarts of oil in it showed almost half a quart over filled. Since switching to the FL1 Motorcraft 5 quarts puts it on "full" line on the dipstick.

SO?

So you are saying the fram has 1/2 quart more filtering than the motorcraft does.. That would seem good to me.

I can't vouch for the difference, but I would like to see this backed up. I would also like to hear why you are so hell bent on using that brand, given the little difference in price for an OEM filter? Or any other filter for that matter, what is better about a Fram?

I think a Motorcraft filter is superior to a Fram, and they run just about the same price.

Here's an interesting comparison:

LOL, I am not an expert on the subject by any means, but the motorcraft shows to have a lot more filter area.

I used to use them (Fram) actually. But I used one on my 2.9L one time, and my pressure was showing lower than normal after about 2 weeks. Checked it out online, sure enough I read a ton of bad experiences. Not all of them are going to be shit, but seems like it happens more often with these filters.

Been using/used Motorcrafts in my 2.3L HSC, 2.9L, 5.0L (dual filters) with good results IME.

For the very small difference in price, why not go for the OEM filter? Top of my coolant resivior even states, use OEM parts for OEM performance. :)

man there is a lot of info i dont really have a choice of which is better i just grab the fram for the simple reason it has the grip on it but i am going to switch back to motorcraft like i said i like them both but since we are dealing with a 2.9 and everyone was saying go with the motorcraft filter becaues of the anti bleedback thats all i need to know i am happy with that thanks for all the replies

Are Walmart's brand Super Tech any good for using on a Ranger's 2.9 engine?

Or, are they too restrictive to good oil flow, for making more valve ticking?

they are nothing more than fram filters, fram has the contract for walmart filters.

Motorcraft is simply the best filter that you can buy for the money.
Why would you buy anything else?

Is a Motorcraft oil filter only available at a Ford dealer, in their parts department?

Or, do some automotive parts store sell them, too?

Which Motorcraft oil filter does the Ford 2.9 engine take, if you happen to know the filter number?

your 2.9 takes Motorcraft part number FL- 1A.

Also avaliable at your local Walmart. (Not that I would recommend anyone support that place.) They are typically available anywhere they sell auto parts, Advanced, Autozone, ect. I use them exclusively.

I try to stick with motorcraft on both vehicles for the common things like oil filter, oil, and plugs. I'm sure others are just as good, (and more expensive) its just my choice.

You can get motorcraft at almost any large parts store. Around here both Advance and Autozone carry their filters but only Autozone has the oil.
