ive been thinking about getting an oil cooler and was wondering what i would gain from it if anything. I know there is something in the tech library about an oil cooler but i doubt i will be able to find one like that. I have been looking at ones from jegs.

something like that one. I know it says its a transmission cooler but i figured it would work for oil. anyone know how it mounts up and where a good place to mount it is?

also, while on the subject of cooling, does anyone know if my truck comes stock with a trans cooler?

Check out the coolers from Perma Cool. They have some that are a dual curcuit, so you can run and cool two fluids (ie. engine oil/trans fluid) at the same time. Attaching one is fairly easy, if you get a mounting kit also. To cool engine oil, you'll also need a filter adapter. Everything else will come in the kits. Mounting needs to be in direct line with good air flow, generally in front of your radiator.

I don't think there's much to gain from an oil cooler. Besides, you don't want the oil to be too cool. It needs to get hot so it can burn off any condensation and other crap inside the engine. If you're concerned about the oil getting really really hot, I would just use a synthetic oil. That's the main reason Corvettes, BMWs and other hi-performance cars require synthetics.

To see if you have a trans cooler, well every auto truck has one built into the radiator, but I'm assuming you mean another one in addition to that. Just follow the trans line that comes out the bottom of the radiator and see if it goes to another cooler. If it just goes straight back to the trans you don't have one.

an oil cooler is another way to "pump" heat out of the engine.

it can help... but you really need an oil cooler system with a
thermostatic control.

there is a difference between a transmission oil cooler and an engine oil cooler.

A transmission cooler typically has 5/16" or 3/8" tubes
any engine cooler with tubes smaller than 1/2 or 5/8" is
fit only for a TINY engine like an ultra compact or a motorcycle.
