Oh Snap - The Magic Yoo-Hoo Machine: Brown Coolant

This is the head of a bolt.

If it has right-hand threads, you loosen it by turning it counterclockwise when facing the head. That is the direction indicated by the arrows in the next picture. It is opposite of the wAy the hands move on a clock. Doesn't matter where the bolts is or what direction you are looking.

Idiot! I was turning it wrong. Got it off with no problem now. Water pump is already off and now just need to track down a gasket. Thought one was included with the motorcraft pump. Oh well. Thanks!

Who likes to drag projects out? THIS GUY!
Random question: When I pulled the water pump, there were two hoses. The one goes to the lower radiator connection. Cool. Cool. But the other one - smaller in diameter - goes somewhere else. I can't see, but I suspect it's going to the engine itself. Looking at the service manual, I'm pretty sure it's the heater hose, (to the engine block?). So... if that's really the case, shouldn't that have coolant and not oil? What came out looks like dirtier than the actual motor oil so I'm hoping this is related to the transmission cooling system. Sorry, just never did this sort of work before and want to make sure I'm clear what I'm on about.

You could just put a 2.9 in it and solve all problems...

I think this engine either has a serious problem or has recently had a serious problem that may not have been repaired properly. After you get this back together, I think you should fill it with water and do some troubleshooting. I would start with compression tests and a rubber glove test. You shouldn't have oil in your coolant like that and I'm still suspicious that you may have coolant in the oil. Is there a good experienced friend that can help you with this?
