odd engine ideas

At what rpm do those engines make that torque?

Because just as important as what torque it makes is WHERE it makes it.

Your 2.9L is pretty torquey right off of idle.

Chances are those import engines dont make anything untill 4000+.

So off the line you'll be very disappointed, as you will be up hill, or after upshifting. Unless you run some hellacious gears.

Your better off with a 351W, it wont be unique by any means, but you'll have the tire burning torque and you';ll still have horsepower for when you wanna run er' flat out.

yeah Dustin is right they all make max torque around 4000. the whole reason i started this thread is because i want to make a truck to take down all the damn hondas around my town. no one has the balls to take them down and i want to do it in my truck. what would you guys thing would be the best engine out of all that is out there would be the best for doing this?

Some how I can see Will driving one of these.

^^^^That looks dangerous^^^^

Put some 4.11 gears and a 5sp behind that 2.9L, you';d be suprised how hard a 2.9 will run.

I used to pick off stock civics all the time with my 87.

these engines are cool. i've never seen such a big crank. but in all seriousness i was thinking of swapping in a 3.0 out of a nissan 300zx the engine is called vg30dett. i just figure that just because it is a 3.0 would make it a tiny bit easier to swap in than the inline 6 2.5 out of a supra or the small sr20det out of a 240sx. yes swapping anything other than a ford in to my truck but i think it has the that the liter is the same and i have found some cheap ones on the web ( about $1600) and i just figure why the hell not.

why put any of these ricer engines an AMERICAN truck you should buy a 351c i want one so bad you tune them right they can go keep it american my 4.0 is pretty quick i race hondas with my truck alll the time ive won a couple times

You can do some work to the 2.9....

Flat top 2.8 pistons (bump up compression), RV cam (more low end torque) headers, etc etc, and a Early throttle body would do wonders. As would a 5sp and 4.11 gears.

Or just drop in a 351W. A mid 80s 4bbl H.O version with a hot cam and headers would do great.

351W would certainly do the trick.

I was pretty happy with a more mid-power range cam that I had custom ground (.435/.455 In/Ex) for my 2.9L. Didn't have too much of a power band because I didn't do anything as far as valve springs. Boosted would probably be the way to go that route. The only thing that sucks is that you have to rely on someone being able to tune the damn thing in. And people around here that run boosted EFI seem like they have to have it tweaked in for every little freaking change.

I don't know if I'd try to race the same engine I was trying to beat in a heavier vehicle.. :D

why dont cha go with a s2000 v-tec set up if you want something off the wall lol but if i had to chose between the 2 you said i waoud say the sr20

Still no low end torque.

Hp is what you want when you stomp the gas at 70. Streetlight to streetlight torque is where its at.

Muscle cars made mounds of torque between 2000-3500RPM. They were designed for street lighht to streetlight romps.

he siad he wanted something out of the ordinary...off the wall lol not balls to the wall

i just want to drop on an engine that will put all the hondas in my town in there place, i hate that they go farting around and think there badasses for doing it. and all the hondas arouund here have at least a chip and a cam.

I don't know why, but it seems like every other person on here is asking about how to make their truck beat riced out Hondas... Why? Is it really that big a deal? Whenever I drive my Camaro there are tons of people that try to race me... I just laugh at them and go on my way... It's not worth it for me, I know that I can whip up on them... Would it be worth it if you crash and kill yourself just to show your car is faster than theirs? If you're at the track, that's a little different, but still, why set your goals so low? There isn't a Honda within 50 miles of me that can come anywhere close to getting a run on me... If you're going to go through this swap for a race truck, do something awesome... Something like that I6 that's in the Skyline, can't they put out over 1000hp on the stock internals? (I admit I don't know that much about import motors)

your thinking of a 2jz out of a supra. but i would like to make a crazy race truck. i'd want to make it streetable at least for a little while i'm kinda liikinf to do something crazy fast but not go to a v8. i was thinking of doing a 302 swap but thats too common for my taste.

So you want to put a import car in a Ranger body? To show the import cars up? Seems a little overcomplicated to me, if you want to street race with an import engine, it would be much easier to do it in the car it came in.

A 2.3T would be pretty hot in a Ranger if you want to keep it all Ford and something out of the norm. They also made a blower kit for the 4.0, that would be way different and very potant.

The 4G63 (I think that is the right code) Mitsubishi 2.0T is pretty spunky too, not quite as much power as the Ford 2.3 but will bolt to certain small Dodge pickup transmixers to come out RWD. It lives on in a modified form in the current Lancer EVO. Without the turbo and with a SOHC head they also used it in forklifts too, pretty tough engine. I had one in a 1990 Plymouth Laser RS (restickered Eclipse) and loved it, I am really tempted to get another one.
