i tried to do a obd1 test on my 1988 ford ranger xlt 2.9V6 and noting happened, so is it the computer for my truck, because my truck starts and does not run? any thing helps. :)

Ford 1985-95 OBD1 code self-retrieval

When checking engine service light on Ford vehicles made before 1995, you can get the code yourself using a $5 tool called "test light". All you need is to hook it up to the vehicle’s diagnostic connector and turn your key on and watch the codes being flashed in your dash panel.

Shown above on your left how the FORD OBD1 diagnostic connector is set up.

You should find the diagnostic connector under your hood normally by the fender next to the battery on the passenger side of engine compartment. By just using your test light and a jumper wire, it will tell you what kind of Ford OBD1 code problem you got.

KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) TEST

1. Make sure engine is fully warmed. If in doubt, run engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes.2. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds for system to shut off. Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual).3. Hook up light and jumper (or a tester if you have one). Turn key to ON (do not start engine). Read the codes.

So that is what you did? You used a test light on the #4 pin and jumpered from #2 to the sti pin? Are you sure you didn't mistake #4 for #5? I use a cheap obd1 tester but have read about the system you're trying to do. It should work just fine and if there is no codes on the computer it should still give a code, I think code #11, to show that there is no more codes. So if no codes are being sent there is a problem somewhere in how you have it hooked up or in the truck wiring.

Could you clarify your statement (my truck starts but does not run)

Find some one with an EEC tester and make it easier on yourself i tried the test light on my vehicle with sub par results but my actron eec tester works great every time

do you think if i bought a new computer it will work?

my truck starts but does not run

What kind of mechanical experience do you have? Can you figure out wiring? Do you have the capability to test the sensors and wiring? If you can't, then you have a few options;
1] take it to a mechanic
2] buy a new to you truck and keep this one as a parts truck.
3] keep buying parts and trying them to see if they fix the problem
4] learn how these trucks work and diagnose the problem
It doesn't seem as if you have tried any thing we have suggested so it seems to me that you don't understand the basics of how trucks work. That's normal, but you have to decide how much time or money you're willing to invest. You also have to be able to describe what's wrong better than you have. Until you try to help yourself, I won't bother trying to help you.

my truck starts but does not run

That is not clarification, it is repetition. They are two very different things. Clarification is to give more information or word a statement differently so that something that was previously not understood now makes sense or is no longer ambiguous. Repetition is to say the same thing again.

I am also highly confused by this nonsensical statement since to say that it has "started" is to say that it is "running".

Now do you perhaps mean to say that the engine will crank over but will not catch? if so, that could be any number of things that are not the computer itself. The self-test is very hard to run properly without either a scan tool or 6 hands. The failure of the self-test to initiate and the failure of the engine to catch together do not automatically equal a bad computer.

I would start by listening closely when the key is turned to run. Do the fuel pumps come on? If not, has the ground from the battery been damaged? The little section with the round in-line plug near the battery being unhooked will prevent the engine from running, as will the little piece that goes up to the core-support.

Do you have spark? The ignition system is completely stand-alone from the engine computer, and the ignition control modules are highly prone to failure.

yes my engine cranks and does not run, i do have fuel pressure, i do have spark, after i try cranking it, i check the spark plugs if they are wet but they are not wet.

Ok, so the plugs have fuel on them, and you have spark. Not a computer problem. Also not something that the very basic self test will help you find. Skip to next step.

Is your firing order correct.

That looks correct. This is no guarantee that the timing is correct. Incorrect timing can prevent the engine from starting. So can poor compression, weak spark, low fuel pressure, etc.

Also, the plugs are wet you say. Are you sure it is fuel and not oil fouling?

Also, check fuel pressure and timing. Timing can be checked while cranking.
