Hello everyone,

I have a 2001 Ranger 4.0 4x4 automatic trans.

Previously I bought a second vehicle, so I haven't been driving my Ranger around much. Went to drive the Ranger after a while of it sitting, put it in drive and I noticed the OD OFF light flashing and a hard shift into second. After driving it for about 5 minutes it went away, this became a regular thing, then the OD Light just stays flashing.

Recently had to drive the Ranger as a daily to work, after two weeks of driving with the OD light flashing 24/7, I had a hard shift and then the light went away, transmission shifted every gear very smoothly, I could not feel a shift.

Two days later after sitting, the light is back on and shifting hard again.....

I replaced both speed sensors, did not fix the issue, transmission is fine on fluid. Has anyone else had this issue, or know a fix for it? I got the code P0708, did some research. I see this code mentioning a Transmission Range sensor. Not too sure if this would be the correct part to replace since everything I've read or watched with this code seems to be dealing with the shifter not going into the intended gear.

Any help would be appreciated!

Same Year+DriveTrain here.
You're describing "1~2~3 slipping" that's common on high mileage 5r55e Transmissions.
May have a blow out ValveBody upper gasket; may need to replace with a BondedGasket; CentralValveBody\Donny in OK is a source.
How long since last Transmission service: TransPanDrop + NewFilter + NewPanGasket + New 5~7qts MerconV + BandAdjust?
You could try handpumping ~24oz of old ATF from DipTube, replace with bottle of LucasTransmissionFix, drive ~50miles;
basicly HiViscosity ATF that helps older leaky Transmissions shift.
I that doesn't help; again HandPump ~1qt from DipTube, replace with new MerconV, drive ~50miles; repeat until satisfied ATF is fully new+clean.
