For the past month now my overdrive light flashes and my transmission is very rough going into second gear. If I have the gas pedal down further it just goes up to red line almost and I have to let off the gas before it will switch. Once I get into 2nd it shifts alright from there on out.

If i punch the gas pedal then it seems to go into second gear. I tried a google search and couldn't find a solid answer but I've heard it could be something simple like electronic sensor and some have said their trans was toast. I checked the fluid levels and it looks fine. Any ideas/advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

PS> I've read on another forum where someone replaced the speed sensor which resolved it so maybe I will try that unless someone else has had the same problem and an alternate solution..

You need to get it scanned. The blinking OD light is your trans throwing a code.

Keep driving it like that and you will be looking to get a rebuild in short order.

Thanks for the input.. I have heard that the code is an extended obd2 code that some code readers will not pickup on.. I really hate to continue driving it in the current condition but I have no other means for transportation.. Maybe this weekend I can get it checked out.

You will need a full system anylizer or someone with the software and a laptop to read the transmission codes. Does the trans light always flash or only cold or only hot? Only hot could be the tare issue with the transmission valve body gasket, not pressurizing second gear correctly.

It does it all the time.. The light usually starts flashing after it kicks hard into 2nd gear. Sometimes when I give it more gas however it will not jerk as hard. Also on the freeway at other speeds if i hit the gas to aggressive to change lanes or speed up it just revs high and takes a while to engage the shift, I often have to let of the gas for it to engage the next gear. :dunno:

go to a trans shop and have them pull the code. like said before me if you keep driving it like you are you WILL frag the trans. be there done that got the bill. what you might want to do is crawl under the truck and pull the trans pan and check to see if you got any metal fragments in the pan if so STOP DRIVING THE TRUCK!!! it could be something as simple as a sensor or as bad as a clutch pack or worse!!!

I had the same problem a few years back. It ended up being that I needed a new valve body and seal in my tranny. The valve body alone was 700.00 as it is a dealer only part.

As for the OD light flashing, the shifter had a broken wire in it that was causing the light to blink on and off. New one installed, fixed it.

Damn man I hope you're dead wrong about the valve body.. $700 is something that will kill me in the bank.. I may try a speed sensor first as it is cheap and if that doesn't fix it then I may check into a valve body and/or taking it to a transmission shop.. If the trans goes out on the truck thats it.. Would take more to fix than the whole truck itself is worth. I hope that is not the case.

Mine had a similar problem when I bought it.. But mine had a pinched fluid line.. I also flushed the tranny and installed new trans filter, so dont really know what fixed the problem.. Hope u get it fixed asap before it fuks the tranny up.

Sadly this is my baby and my only means of transportation. It appears this isn't ranger specific issue but Ford specific. I've heard the speed sensor fix and read it but it seems that ONLY applies if your speedo isn't reading you correct speed, which mine is... Since it is the weekend I plan to get a filter/flush and possibly a speed sensor replacement but if that doesn't fix it then I will look into a shop to try n pull some trans codes...

::crosses fingers:: although this is gay I've had the truck since 18 senior in highschool and now 26 and this rig has brought to and from many locations so I would hate to depart with it so I guess eventually I will find out.. I've seen other posts on the od light blink and hard shift on other non ranger but ford specific forums with some bad end results so I willl prepare for the worst but expect the best.. hell it only has 103,000 miles on it.. :dunno:
