So I found a 91 exploder not far from me with bad heads or headgaskets owners arent sure which, but their asking $300 for it. now the ?? is will my Bll haul it the 50-60 miles i need to with out blowing up? its 2.9 w/5spd, with stock axles if it matters. Anyone?

I towed a 99 Ex 300+ miles with my 3.0 4wd Ranger.

Try to pull out at idle rpm or just slightly higher and get the clutch out as soon as possible with minimal slippage. RPMs will be your friend and ignore 5th gear. I could go 60mph much of the way so I followed a lot of Swift semis.

Plan your stops so you can roll through lights, brake way in advance. Anytime you can avoid touching the brakes and clutch, do it. Watch out for the idiots who will change lanes and shorten your stopping distance. Expect that.

I''d do it with a two wheel tow dolly and not give it a second thought. Tell the rental guy you are towing an Escort or Sentra. Remove the rear driveshaft if it's an automatic transmission.

oh yea most of this will be free way driving. and thanks Earl Im thinking im just gonna go ahead and do it:headbang:

If its an automatic, you MUST remove the driveshaft, unless you want to replace the trans.

And if the dolly doesn't have fuctioning brakes stay home.

People have been suprised by what I tow on my Dolly,
(Yeah, I own a dolly) but my dolly has electric brakes:)

i use to pull a heavy 17 foot boat and trailer from the bumper with my 1989 4 bangin 5 speed toyota pick up. if you keep the speed down and give yourself plenty of stoping distance you should be fine. thats only my opnion and im not a pro.

I pulled my explorer sport parts rig 5 miles home with my 2.9 B2, no way I'd do it much more than that.

I pulled a 3900 pound sonata home up the side of a big ass hill with my 3.0. had the 3.73s and 32s, so it was 1st gear all the way up, but it pulled it. got to 45 on the highway, and it didnt seem to mind. it was only 3 or 4 miles, maybe not even, but it did it. that was about 6 days before my rear end went bang though, so, idk if that may have caused it.

I pulled a little 20HP tractor home on a 16 foot flatbed trailer. Dolly w brakes would be best method tho.

Last Friday I towed a 4040+ LB. Explorer from Hyak on Snoqualmie Pass, in Washington state, to my home in Yakima, WA with a 3610LB. 02 Ranger, on a tow bar. This is all freeway except maybe two miles total on both ends.
Third gear on the 5% and 6% hills as well as down the other side (most of these hills are 2 to 3 miles long, with one being 4+% and 5 miles long). 4th gear on the flatter freeway sections. All at about 60 MPH with 10 or more car lengths between me and what ever was in front. If some butt got in between I slowed down to keep the distance.
Use you own judgment after reading what everybody says here.

I won't be towing another Explorer with my Ranger though.
