Hello! I have a 91 Ranger. It has the 4.0L engine. Here is a pic!

It will not start with the key. Engine turns over great, but it doesn't even try to start. It has fuel pressure at the rail.. Checked for spark once. No spark. Not sure about injector pulse. Kinda hard to troubleshoot without a helper around... I'm going to check for spark again right now and clean up the wires at the battery terminal and tighten them down.

Weird thing is that I can push start the truck and then it runs great :icon_confused:

Get a helper so you don't hurt yourself, Bro!!! It could be an ignition issue. No spark could mean a few things..but it is best to have an extra set of hands!!!

Might be a bad ignition switch. I had a nissan once that wouldnt start when you cranked but as soon as you let off the switch from start to run it would backfire and run. Basically during the start sequence it was loosing power to the ignition box somehow.

good idea about double checking all your hot wires and grounds. clean them up good and reconnect them after coating them with some dielectric grease if you have any. hopefully that will solve your problem. good luck!

what if you cross the solenoid?

When I jump the solenoid with the key on, it still doesn't start. It might be the ignition switch, but I checked for power at the coil with the key on and while trying to start and it had power. The weird thing is that after a push start, it would start right back up with the key. Then it started getting worse. I would have to drive it for awhile and let the truck fully warm up b4 the key worked again.

When the key works, it works every time.

It noticed that when it starts with the key, it starts up within a few turns, but it has a weaker start than it used to. If that makes any sense...

Truck runs great once it starts.

I had to take it up to a shop up the street. Gotta have wheels. He seemed to think right away that it was the coil, but said that he would run some tests..

I'll let you know if he can fix it. Thanks everyone!

It sounds like the starter relay or starter isnt turning quite up to snuff.

These trucks can be goofy sometimes. A year and a half ago I had a problem with mine when it would fire right up but as soon as I turned it off, it wouldn't start for 20-30 minutes. It's probably just some stupid electrical dealie.

CORROSIONS in the wires caused this for me also, I have a 93 4.0l 4x4 and my wire was sliced and corrosion was down in there. worht a look.

I know this sounds really stupid and it probably won't cure your problem. But disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and see if that helps.

My truck is still not starting unless I push start it :bawling:

I paid a shop up the street almost $100 dollars and when I parked it at home, let it cool down, it wouldn't start!

The shop is telling me that the ignition module is not getting a reading from the crank sensor. He claims that its the wires between the two.

Then why does it push start?

Gotta fix it. Gotta fix it....:icon_welder:

that does make snese..........none of this thread makes sense......you have power at the coil but no spark, it starts after it is warmed up?, it push starts everytime.......did you check the fuel pressure? if it was my truck for less than $20 I would change the ignition switch.

I was going to change the ignition switch last night but, the truck started right up. This is the first time it has started cold in a long time! I was messing with the clutch safety switch at the time.

On the clutch pedal switch, the sensor has five wires connected to it. Two fat wires which I have found out are for the starter.

What are the other three wires for? Does it somehow relate to the three wires that fire the coil? If you know the answer please help!!

In the mean time I will hope that the problem is gone. Thanks!

Happy new year!
