Does anybody know where the brain for this thing woud be. I wanna start there until i can get the motor out. I know about the thing in the engine bay, but i read something about "behind the dash", is that the same thing?

The computer is in the engine bay. The GEM is under the dash but you shouldn't need that.
 
Started pulling out 3.0 stuff from the engine bay. Intake manifold is off, valve covers off. Exhaust is free on driver's side. Broken stud on pass. side, so I'm going to leave that manifold on and take it apart at the down pipe. Got all the wires i could find disconnected from the engine and trans. Got the radiator and fan shroud out. Removed the airbox. That's all i can think of right now, but i snapped a few pics when i was all done.
Intake off and wires piled on top.

Passenger side, i put tape over the ecu/pcm (?) portal to keep it clean in there.

Well, pretty sure the motor is locked up. I tried to turn it over with a socket on the large bottom nut. NO DICE ?. So my plan is to het as much as i can from the Expo, and keep moving forward until i can source a motor. I will still pull the awd trans and all everything associated, the engine harness and other tidbits will keep me busy for a while. I see 302s and 5.0s for sale all over fbmarket and letgo, so bo worries.



p.s. I kinda blame @91stranger for the locked motor. He cursed my good deal woth his negativity. ? jk. I kinda expected.
 
You might do an autopsy and see what happened.

I got burned on my first 302. I turned it when I looked at it. I got it home and noticed it wouldn't turn all the way over, ripped the heads off and one cyl had been sitting with water in it.

The one I ended up using is a lot better all the way around (and 11 years newer)

I plan on taking it apart, just to learn the innards, now. It was a beach vehicle. Lots of sand in the carpet, lots of rust underneath. Thats why i tried to turn it, the bottom pully is corroded bad. Oh well, at least i have a starting point. Going to start stripping the expo for saleable parts. Front bumper was destroyed in transit, but most all other body parts are good.
 
Seems like the 4spd auto was the only one available with awd 5.0s. Does anybody know what rear ends came with these.
 
Disk brake 31 spline 8.8. Several ratios were optional.
 
And the 4 speed auto in the explorer is a rock solid unit behind the 5.0.
