No rear end Expo.

This is the one you need:

Since you have an '01 you have the newer E style PATS compared to the '00 Explorer's B version. Mine was B to B so all I did was migrate the PATS module from behind the glove box (which I'm still not convinced was necessary) and use Forscan to add my keys into the Explorer's computer. @RonD or someone else would have to clarify the details on version E and how it affects you.

According to Ford manuals if the PCM or PATS module needed to be changed on the "B" type system then the "new" part would need to be "Married" to the old one
These units used RSA encryption to "talk" to each other, so the "marrying" was needed so both had compatible encryption keys that can be used to encrypt the "OK to start" or "Not OK to start" message that passed between them
Also with key on, boot up, they exchange "I am here" messages

And from some of the V8 swaps done by members here this seemed to be the case, they needed both the PCM and the PATS module from the same explorer to get start up, or they needed to have PATS permission deleted from the PCM

In 2004 and up a similar set up was used on Rangers, the HEC Digital Cluster had the PATS module, and sent the PCM the "yes" or "no" for start up
And the HEC Cluster itself also needed to be "married" to the PCM or neither would work, as seen in 2005 Rangers that didn't have PATS but also wouldn't start if cluster was unplugged or swapped

Yes, type E has the PATS software inside PCM, so no separate module

So, If I can get PATS deleted from the Expo, I should be good with the Ranger Cluster and Expo PCM
OR
Use the PCM and PATS w/gauge cluster from Expo.

Is this what i'm reading, or did I "F" it up?

Thanks @fastpakr, I actually did NOT have that one printed out, but I did print out @MudSlanger's article and @Craig0320 0's write-up on the swap, along with the Spec's Sheet for the 5.0l.

1998-2001 explorer V8s had PATS, 1996/7 didn't, but they also used lower fuel pressure

Yes, PCM programmers can delete PATS check and automatic transmission software as well if you want manual trans, on 1998-2001 explorer PCMs

1993 to 2003 Rangers used analog clusters and 1996-2001 Explorer V8s as well, so no issue swapping those except for repining some wires depending on years used in the swap

2004 and up Rangers is when the cluster swaps or engine size swaps become a big issue
Not sure when explorers started using HEC Clusters, but wasn't in 2001, lol, last year for the 5.0l OHV

Thanks RonD.:icon_thumby: I have seen you work you magic with other forum members, and now, I've been lucky enough to be a recipient. I know all of this info is available some where in here, but you made it simple enough for me to understand. :icon_cheers:
I was concerned about the gauge cluster missing from the Expo, but i have two clusters for the Ranger

Don't forget to put your tools away!

To bad PJ is taking a break... he could make you another avatar with two trucks on bricks.

Actually... I'm glad you found yourself a donor truck to get your Ranger back on the road. You will learn lots and I hope it goes as pain free for you as possible.

Its an Eddie Bauer AWD, tan interor, the seats aren't that bad, not great either, exhaust has been chopped up but all the 02 sensors are still there. Rear leafs are present but have been hacked up to get the axle out. Radiator is missing but pikNpul has radiator sales all the time. Definitely going to have to hunt down some pieces along the way, but im ready to start the journey.

I see god's country... and smell pasties and fudge.

Its called winter in Florida, beautiful landscapes,

...krazy people

Fun fact: Florida leads the nation in meth addicted alligators...
