No Limited-Slip on 2010 Ranger?!?

Well, I put a Detroit Locker in the back of my 85 F-250, and a Spicer trac lock clutch-type limited slip in the front, and IT DOESN'T GET STUCK, even with that 460 up in the front trying to dig holes all the time.

But I need a new vehicle, and ordered the 2010 Ranger with all this fancy new technology, so I guess we'll see how it works.

I've seen on the net that quite a few peeps are fairly happy with the AdvanceTrack in SUVs and F-150s.

Maybe when the Ranger comes in, we'll have to take it and the F-250 out to play?

If you don't get stuck then you are not trying. :icon_thumby:

Dad's '80 F-350 is pretty tough too. When he first got it he was going thru a drift about as high as the hood, and doing a right fine job of it too. About 3/4 of the way thru (it was several truck lengths long) the engine died. Crawled out and dug a trail to the front, popped the hood and snow was contoured to the bottom of the hood.

That is its only stick to date with functioning 4x4, when they pulled it out they discovered there was water running under the front left tire and they were actually in the ditch, so it is good it died where it did. It has open diffs too.

I picked up a 2010 FX4 back in December and I was disappointed at the lack of a lsd too. I was really looking forward to getting that nice Torsen unit but instead all I could get was an open diff.

My best guess is that they are starting to phase out the Rangers and they've discontinued that as an option because they're just getting rid of what axles and diffs they currently have.

My plan is to just get a lsd from the junkyard and keep the stability control turned off-I don't like how the stability control works anyways. It's intended to prevent roll-overs, not to get through mud holes.

It is definitely from the phase out, or else there would be no reason for them to put all the money into the f150 and superduty lockers and limited slips. Just buy an aussie locker to throw in there and it will be golden.

Strange, 2010's on the lot at a local dealer here still have LSD's. I'll see if I can find some still kicking around.

I think this could be Ford's dumbest phase out of all time, the amount they sell in Canada could colonize their own country.

The 2011 FX4 in Canada has limited slip and AdvanceTrac. I have the 2010 FX4 (no LS) and typically turn off AdvanceTrac in winter and when it's slick....too many "incidents" when I leave AdvanceTrac on.

I have a 2011 FX4 with the LS and i haven't really noticed the traction control to really be doing much at all. with the 4.10 gears and a manual the rear end slides easily on wet roads in 2wd.

Resurrecting an old thread here.

Say Sparky, were you able to install a locker or a L/S box in your 2010 Ranger?

I've been looking into the same task and a friend who is a factory trained tech but now self-employed says the traction control will not know the difference if a L/S is installed after the fact. Just push the button to turn it off and then motor on.

I'll probably get it done after mine goes out of warranty.

And another thing...

Today I took a ride through the nearby national forest and stopped at one point and turned off the traction control, then put it in Drive and punched it.

I got two equal, very defined , six foot claw marks where it dug into the gravel and sandy soil on take off. :icon_confused:

The head scratcher for me on this is the open axle code, which would lead me to believe I should see only one tire mark as a result of it breaking traction on take-off.

But I got traction on both sides. Is there some difference in the T/C model rear ends that equates to a L/S?

Next, the other part of this so-called "safety package" (I.e., gubbermint mandated throttle-minder and fun-killer) is the anti-roll and anti-slide features, which means the computer throws on the brakes if it senses the vehicle losing it in a curve.

Well .. the blasted thing works, and on a half-dozen gravelly curves it kicked in and scrubbed off speed for me. The light on the dash would flash, and after a while I could tell that it was independently applying a bit of brake to whichever wheel the computer deemed critical.

If you have entertained any fantasies of power sliding your Ranger through a curve and you have T/C, forget it it.

Realistically, I can live with the thing as is but I still prefer to be in control of all that myself.

I've got to think that somewhere a conniving, geekly Ranger owner has figured a get around that will allow permanently disabling the T/C stuff without messing up the ABS, but until I find that I've no choice but to live with it.

In the meanwhile if any of you happen on this thread and have an answer to the L/S question as an aftermarket fix please post or PM and let me know. I'll tuck the info away into my ever changing Swiss cheese body of knowledge.

Thank in advance - :icon_thumby:
