Hi y'all. First post. This has been happening on/off for a few months. Now seems permanent. Sitting in the driveway.

PATS light is normal (blinks every couple seconds)
Replaced Ignition Switch
Removed and tested Starter (tested good...after reinstall truck started...until a few days later back to same no joy condition)
Battery brought to parts store and tested good.

Do not get 12 volts at brown/white wire at starter when key is put to start
Do not get 12 volts at starter relay (same wire) when key is turned to start (I do get 12 volt at constant Yellow wire)

No voltage at #24 fuse when I turn key to start.

What next? Continuity checks?

Dad says 'rig a switch to the cab' Me 'I want to fix it back to normal' probably cause I do not know how to do that yet...

Does the plastic center of the NSS (DTR) sensor supposed to stay stationary when gear is shifted?

Welcome to TRS :)

Power path for 2002 Ranger with key turned to START

Battery---Fuse 11(engine box)---Ignition switch-----fuse 24(cab box)---Neutral switch---Starter Relay(engine box)-----PATS Ground for relay

The Starter Relay closes, and IT passes power from fuse 11(engine box) to Starter motors relay/solenoid, but I see a Yellow/Blue wire on Starter motor

Starter relay shows Tan/red stripe wire coming from Neutral switch

Manual trans has Clutch switch, to prevent starting if clutch pedal is not down all the way.

Automatics have DTR sensor on transmission shifter linkage and won't pass starter voltage unless in Park or Neutral
In Rangers the column shifters could get loose and while Trans would go into Park DTR sensor would not be closed, so try shifting to Neutral and see if Key works

Thank You Ron.

The color code you mentioned is probably correct as I was going from memory...I will verify today. (or colors faded over time?)

I replaced the steering column bushings a few weeks ago. (what a difference that made...nice and tight shifting)

Another freezing cold week here in Titusville...this Florida native may not be out there working! Anything below 68 degrees I have to break out my flip flop socks... Will post updates of progress. (in the 40's this week)

The starter signal wire is Yellow/Light Blue.

The Big Box auto store sold me a bad Ignition Switch!!!

I spent hours troubleshooting only to go back to ignition switch red/blue wire and see no 12 volts when key in 'Start' position.

I was sooo Mad! especially this Florida Native out in 40 degree weather on cold concrete probing starter wires...LOL

Good work :icon_thumby:

Yes, "new" used to mean "tested and working"

"New" now means "you test it for us, and if it doesn't work, pull it out and drive it back to us, with the receipt, and we will replace it, FREE", lol

To me FREE means I should get a WORKING PART, and my money back for the trouble, now thats free
