hey i got a question for you guys, i live in wyoming and we dont require emissions test and such. i have my 96 ranger 4.0 4x4 and it will only be used for off road purpose. im wondering if removing the whole exaust, and going to a 2.5 with a low resistance muffler is the best power/fuel saving combo. or if just leaving them on will do the job. let me know what you guys think cause it will probably never really hit the high way, and if it does i dont have to worry about emissions.

Federal law states that you are required to have one. If you drive it to the wheeling location, you still have to have it. In all honesty its not worth removing anyway. You wont gain anything ditching the cat. If you do exhaust dont go over 2.5 or you will be going backwards in terms of performance. If you really want to ditch the cat you can get universal high flow cats for not too much. Stock ones arent very restrictive at all though

like stated above, modern vehicles are designed to work their best with the cats. the only thing you will gain by removing them is a louder exhaust. unless you have a custom tune, new heads, and a better cam, you will lose power by removing them. especially low end torque, which if your truck is used for wheeling then you need that low end torque.

if you take them off it makes your truck rev better and makes your exhaust louder. The 4.0 sounds pretty good with a flowmaster and no cats.

What do you mean rev better? Just that it revs louder?

no... i guess it revs easier, you can feel it. they are not that restrictive but it does make an improvement to take them off. yeah, it would be better to get a highflow but why waste the money if your state doesn't do emmisions.

Because it doesn't matter if there is emissions testing or not...it is federal law.....

Read the sticky at the top of this section of the forums...

My word you people are stupid.

How about reading up on the law and how these devices work and what they do before you start tampering with them.

Do you people realize that the converter removes the most toxic by product of the combustion process and converts it to water and CO2?

You know the guy in the horror film that says "Gee I wonder what this button does" and then presses it and releases the monster? That is you people who obviously have no idea how the emissions system functions and want to just go ripping it off because "the government says it has to be there so it must be bad for performance".

Steam Boat, that rant is directed at 91, not you. You at least were smart enough to ask if it was a bad idea before doing it and then telling everyone else how great it is.

To bad Jim can't tag the words related to the "cats" and the post have to go through moderators before it's posted so we don't have to talk about this stupid crap every month or so..

I know sometimes people have legitimate question on the subject..

no, you guys are stupid. have you ever taken a cat off before and driven the vehicle? no? then you don't know!!! so stop giving advice when you have never done it before. your just repeating bull crap that you heard. cars run better without cats. i know professionals that even say your car will run better without cats. yes its better for emissions to leave them on, but if you want it to run better and your state doesn't do emissions... oh yeah and i know how a cat works! "the government says it has to be there so it must be bad for performance" wow that's like a 10 year old that thinks they know everything about cars. you don't know me and you don't know what i know so shut up

I have no clue what you just said. Try punctuation next time, it makes your post somewhat readable 95% of the time.
Oh! IBTL! :D

Your logic is flawed and obviously you are spewing the same crap some dumped on your chest.

The reason cat removal USED to work better is cause vehicles didn't have computers to tune them. So back in them olden days your grand pappy could remove the cat, get out a screw driver and dump a bunch of fuel into the engine to make it "run better....ish". HOWEVER IT DOESN'T RUN MORE EFFICIENTLY!!

Now vehicles have improved and changed. Just like your grand dad now shits his pants instead of thinking he knows something about cats. Now the engines are designed with back pressure in mind, a COMPUTER not a carb determines fuel ratios with the back pressure in mind. So when you take away the cat the ecu gets false readings which makes your truck run like shit.

Maybe I'd be convinced you could make your truck run better without a cat if you had a dyno and a programmer. But your ignorance to how a modern vehicle operates makes me believe you don't know what either of those are.

And before you break out the "well my truck runs better" bs I can tell you it doesn't. I bought my truck without cats and had to reinstall one to pass emissions in my area. My first tank of gas after install netted me a 2 mpg increase.

Now go home, change your daddies diaper and tell him that he and you need to learn how a modern engine works.

We've been told guys. Nothing to do but throw our hands up in the air now. A lot of you wasted a lot of money on school, when you could have just asked this guy. He knows someone who knows.
