I saw somebody was doing a 2jz swap and it got me thinking - an SR20DET would probably be easier to make it fit, and they're so easy to find... and usually pretty cheap. Am I talking stupid or is this a half decent idea?

uh... WHY???

you can do a 302 swap for less money and work, and a little sr20 would NEVER even come close to the power output of a 302 (mod for mod).

Look for usable power and torque. With a heavy truck, the turboed 2.0 will just not cut it. You will be disappointed. They were put in 2500# cars for a reason, not 4600-5000# trucks.

The 2JZ-GTE has 2 more cylinders, and with a 3.0L for torque and boost coming in @ 2200 RPM, it is more applicable and reasonable.

For the time and money, stick with the boosted Ford 2.3L 4 cylinder.

Aside from speculation, would you actually build this or just curious?

ah yes i almost forgot - if a v8 is not your thing, then the 2.3 is still the best way to go for a ranger. is a 4 banger built for a TRUCK, not a beer can. and with a turbo, it can get pretty intense hahaha

Turbos, IMO, are worthless.

Cubic Inches are the only way to go if you want actual power (torque) and not just big numbers from small displacement to impress your buddies. Yeah, a 4banmger turbo might be able to make 500hp, but its spinning 15,000RPM, by that time a 351 would be gone with a measely 250hp, but twice (or 3 times) the torque at 1/4 of the RPM.

Alot of nissan haters in here. Ive actually been thinking bout doin the same thing. And sr or and rb25 out of a skyline. And i have a 240 that shits on v8s. 4bangers and 6 cylinder motors are the best.

plus 4 bangers get the gas mileage... im a die hard ford guy but when i first started driving i was all nissan... did all the research and turboed my hardbody not raggin on anything but mustangs and camaros were just not fast enough for the 1500 rpm spool... yea off the line their great but higher in the rpm range they fall off and i always shifted at 6000... the saying " their is no replacement for displacement" is wrong.. when turbos with the right tune can double torque.. so 4 cyl are by far the best for everything and now that the parts are being more readily available and cheaper every month while the V-8 stuff is getting more and more pricey for the good quality parts...

now for the sr swap not to be killing your swap dreams or anything keep with the 2.3 nissans are expensive to build and hard to keep up trust me 5000 in a motor and it was not more than stock with a turbo

im not knocking turbo's at all. infact i now own one. but the saying is true. WILLPOWER IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HORSEPOWER, AND THERES NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT.

turbo's have there place. and i love an sr20det motor, but for the time and effort, and the money to make that thing work, a v8 is more logical, or a turbo 2.3

a buddy of mine has a brand new sr20det motor fresh from japan. greddy turbo spinning 15 psi of boost. all kinds of managment. and spent alot of money having the thing professionally tuned. and in an 89 240sx, only puts down 250hp 320ftlbs at the rear wheels.

now those are some sick numbers, and it pulls straight to 6200, but id rather take the money and stroke and work a modular motor,(260-302) than figure out all this tuning on on sr20det engine.

but hey, if thats your thing, go for it. i will be the last one to tell you not to do it.

but there are some things to consider. but if you go through with it, please post lots of pictures. and a burnout vid when done.

why????? is my question too. you look to have a 89 2wd 4 wheezer.

from this i would guess you want more power. if this is a toy/back up ride a 351 4 bbl will be good and cost effective if you shop right.

if you would like to drive this truck daily i suggest to turbo build a 2.3.

a well built 2.3 is by far the best bet on a 2wd reg cab truck....especially any lowered truck. you can squeak by with your current drivltrain if need be. and once properly and carefully built throughout with a light 2wd will blow away 90 percent of the street drivable (average) v8 swaps.

personally i prefer v8 engines. the sound of a 4 wheezer even if it makes 1000 hp makes me cringe with disgust. but that is a personal problem i suffer from. so i will never have competitive fuel economy.

if for whatever reason you just adore the nissan engines then go that route.

you can get a improvement balance of power and economy and overall performance from stock in any case.....so get to it:icon_thumby:

Regardless of the application, forcing more air into a motor will create more power. There is not argument here, turbo's are not worthless.

You don't HAVE to spin at 15,000 rpm when running a turbo. You can get a turbo to spool very quickly and provide plenty of low rpm torque.

Your 351 with 250 HP will easily have 30% more torque at a low rpm with a quick spooling turbocharger.

You can always add more displacement, but then you add Weight, Size and lessen fuel economy. Not something most people are looking to do when building a truck.

I would love to see someone do it. But 99% of the time when someone asks a question like this, they will never do it. Just do it, it won't fit and it will be goofy, but if you're proud of it, go for it.

As for not having enough power or torque... bullshit. You could have a 50hp/ftlb engine and still motivate a truck, you just got to build it properly. It just won't do it quickly or hit any high speed.

Hell you could pry swap a briggs and stratton lawnmower engine in a ranger and motivate it if you were determined enough... just wouldn't drive uphill... and you'd have like 100:1 gearing... on 25's....

My saying is:

"There are 3 ways to make power: Displacement, Boost, or Nitrous. The more of them you combine, the more power you make." That is a more accurate statement.

In fact, boost makes an excellent replacement for displacement. Take a mild 2.3 with a properly sized and tuned turbo at about 15 psi and you have a motor that makes essentially the same power/torque curves as a mild 5.0.

I'm not advocating puting a turbo 4 banger in an F-250 and trying to tow cars with it. But for a lightweight pickup like a ranger, they'll usually be quicker and get better mileage than an F-250 engine. All a 460 ranger is going to do is melt rubber. My 270 HP 2.3 doesn't have a problem with that at all; it just goes.

Strongly disagree. Many Old Timers will argue FOR the Cleveland power and N/A applications til the day they die. The 351C in the Torinos etc. had the torque and reputation back in the 70's, but the Windsors now have a better aftermarket that was never available then. Same thing with turbocharging...it was unreliable and inefficient during a time when carburetors ruled big power...

Turbocharging makes up for displacement. Turbo size and impeller design make certain small displacements very applicable. Just as you can design a 302ci that makes power at higher RPMs or lower RPMs, you can design a boosted 2.5L that makes good torque and a lot of streeable hp without 15,000 RPM.

Besides, 15,000 RPM is such an exaggeration that I am unsure if I can take your post seriously. What is this, F1?

No, we are hidden. :headbang: I still want a 240 with the SR20DET & a Kouki front and pulled rear fenders. Oh, and I've ridden shotty at Texas World Speedway in the GT-R / 35...awesome. Cheating launch start to 60 mph @ 3.2 seconds, though. But Nurburing Porsche Killer...quite possible, but still debatable. :icon_confused:

It can be done, and by all means, please do it! But if you are wanting a DD out of this, then you will need more torque to move your Ranger at a reasonable pace. Do you want to be the guy on the street that people are giving the middle finger to after a stop light? :thefinger:

Realistically here, in natural stock form, your basic swap will feel like it is bogging down. You asked for our advice, Original Poster, and this is it. Myself and others included, have already done swaps. Take our advice, shove it, or don't post anymore. Read / research all of our other threads on this forum first.

My saying is:

...

+1.

Finally, sense.

Your opinion, IMO, is worthless.

Why are you always spouting off this garbage?

Please try and limit the name calling and keep this about the cars. We don't want to get a thread locked or for someone to get the

Where is the Original Poster anyways?
