So I have been doing research and the 4.0 was in rangers and explorers until 2001. I have been looking for a low mile 4.0 vehicle to drive and some day swap into my ranger- is it possible to use a 2001 4.0 OHV in my 1991 4.0 ranger? Is there things that have to be changed? like the intake or??

Thanks!

Kirby

You can do that. You will need the later style flywheel with 8 holes, the correct clutch, swap fuel rails and upper intake, and possibly exhaust manifolds. You will also need to swap all sensors.

2001 to 2012 Ranger would be the 4.0l SOHC engine
1990-2000 is the 4.0l OHV

1990-2000 would be a plug and play swap using your 1991 computer and wiring harness, as long as you swap your 1991 upper and lower intakes over to the later model 4.0l OHV
And yes as adsm08 said the flywheel/flexplate needs to be swapped

2001 and up 4.0l SOHC swap would be more involved, you could use current transmission if its a Manual, if automatic then you need to get one for the 4.0l SOHC, and this will also come with speedometer issues for 1991 Ranger
And you need 2001 and up 4.0l SOHC Computer and wiring harness
Exhaust and added O2 sensor
New fuel pump and Filter

IMO, the 4.0l SOHC swap into 2000 or older Ranger is not a good swap
Same work is involved as a V8(5.0l) swap and you have something Ford never made, anyone can go out and buy a 4.0l SOHC Ranger, so can you

It's not that much work. It can use the same trans as a regular 4.0, some wiring is needed, PCM swap, easier fit.

Kirby yes, you can trust this advice, I have a newer 1998 4.0 OHV in storage that's going to l replace the 4.0 in my 94.
I understand that you swap everything from the old one to the newer, the wiring harness, don't use the camshaft position sensor, no EGR on mine, I don't know about yours,

Trans only works in that swap if its a manual, and 2001 and up manual trans PCM
1991 would have A4LD automatic, so wouldn't work with 2001 and up PCM, would need the 5R55E trans

Fair enough, but why bother keeping an A4LD?

Thanks a lot guys.

I am talking OHV. I like the power of a SOHC, but I don't think I want anything to do with the two timing chains and all that nonsense.

I don't think it has EGR, its a plain jane 1991 colorado truck with 254k on it and counting. Burns a little oil and leaks alot. It is also a Manual tranny and tcase. I haven't found a donor yet but I am looking.

This just got me to wondering was there ever a stock 4.0 5 speed 2 wheel drive?

Seems like it would be great for Interstate travel, just haven't seen any.

Extended cabs were majority with 4.0l, 2wd and 4x4
But some regular cabs did have 4.0l, 2wd
And rare but around are regular cab 4.0l 4x4s

Do you think I could get away with only swapping the upper intake on a newer engine? Is there something particularly different about the lower? In my case, I have a 96 Engine, but an upper intake from a 92.
