New to trucks, B2300 questions

Hey everyone, just got a 95 B2300 5 speed, 4 wd for my tile business.

I hope to get around 25 mpg, but with tools, a cap, and 4wd, I am not sure if this is possible.

I am going to check out the site, but I thought I would ask a few questions.

Is regular trans fluid ok for the front and rear diff? I would like to replace it, it has 136k on the truck, but it is in great shape.

The struts are shot, getting KYB OEM equivalents to replace.

Also, I have two diesels, so I am not used to the gas smell, but I think my truck is running rich, how could I diagnose this?

no you need diff oil for the diff. trans oil goes in the trans. most guys with 2wd cyls are averaging anywhere from 20-27 mpg, so i doubt you'll get 25 unloaded. i would expect around 17-19 mpg. and for credibility I owned a 95 b2300 last year w/ only 60k miles and it only got 26 mpg.

A 95 will be OBDII. If it is running rich the computer will tell you. Until it starts throwing the check engine light up, I wouldn't worry about it.

Is there something in particular that makes you think it is running rich, or just the exhaust smell?


And where did you get the idea that tranny fluid is appropriate for the differentials? ATF is much too thin. Many older manual transmissions used 80-90 gear lube, but yours probably wants 75-140.

Well, I did say I'm new to trucks . So, is there a front diff, rear diff, and tranny needing fluid?

Just a noticeable gasoline smell while running and after shutoff in the exhaust.

maybe a fuel leak? or your nose is so used to the sulfur smell any other smell seems much stronger than it really is haha. i'm going through the same thing, but in reverse

About the fuel, yeah, very possible

So I should get a quality 75-140 for the trans, and diff lube for both diffs. I am just kind of talking out loud here, so sorry if I seem repetitive. Thanks for the help!

just reiterating ....

ATF in tranny and transfer case

gear oil in front and rear diffs

you have an 0bd-2..you can can check for a pending code.......make sure the cel comes on koeo

Ford has been putting ATF in it's Manual trannies for YEARS. I've heard that AT fluid has detergents in it which is actually a good thing because it keeps the tranny internals clean!

Wow ok ATF in the manual trans and gear
Lube in the diff's... I may sound dumb when I ask the fill amounts for all 3.
The diff's just fill up to the fill screw right? The trans I am unsure of... TIA!!

I think its the same for the trans, just fill until the oil comes out the hole, just make sure your truck is level (account for the rake of the truck) so you dont over or underfill it. did the truck not come with the owners manual?

I'd still like to ask how you guys or gals change the two differential fluid... Is the drain just pull off the cover and reseal it?

Btw motor oil, trans, and transfer case change went without a hitch

yup pull off the cover to drain, then reseal and fill up through the fill plug on the opposite side of the cover. and yeah its crazy how much info you can find in the owners manual
