New to The Ranger Station and Looking For Advice

It could be viewed as a starting point. I would bet that the 4wd issue is with the actuator motor bolted on the transfer case, its either corrosion on the connector, easily resolved. Or a bad shift motor, again, easily resolved. I had the same engagement issue with my truck when I bought it, the electric connection was corroded and prevented the 4wd from engaging. As far as the interior goes, lift the carpet and check the floor out. Neglect and abuse are two different animals. Ultimately, you'll have to either, give it a thorough going over, or look for a different truck. Welcome to the club. By the way, I knew nothing about 4wd vehicles when I bought my Ranger, but I learned. As will you if its what you want. Best of luck on your search.

Looks pretty hammered. if you have a lot of time, tools, skills, and buddies with the same, and some money, then go for it. Otherwise get something a little more ready to go. If you are limited to budget, then find the nicest thing you can for your budget, as in low mileage and taken care of. Id wave $500 bucks cash in front of the guy, which he will accept...then take it home as a parts donor or silly build of some sort....maybe a lowrider hopper w/ a dancing bed.

Did you say that the interior is a little beat up but nothing a good detail can’t fix ? ...lol .... I hate to be negative but its the worse interior I've ever seen. The door panel is busted up, the steering column clam shell cover is missing and why was it even removed ? The seat is torn in numerous places and stained all over and the carpet is trashed. That's all I can see in the pics. This interior has been completely neglected and abused. Other than the mechanical defects that you know about, how many more hidden issues may there be ? This truck was not taken care of. This truck is going to be nothing but a headache and a money pit.... Save up a little more money and find one that you can at least enjoy driving home.
That’s nothing, I routinely see 2015 and newer vehicles with interior worse than that. People are freaking disgusting.

That said, the interior is definitely beat which tends to indicate a likelihood of poor maintenance. The 4x4 not working could be a few different issues, but the usual likely culprit is the shift motor on the transfer case. Of course, it could also be a fuse or wire or even the 4x4 module. Or a combination.

Check the frame on whatever you look at, notable spots are drivers side next to the gas tank, rear frame rails around the leaf spring hangers/rear bumper, and passenger side the crossmembers near the cab/bed junction. Also check the front coil spring buckets.

If the frame is solid and it seems mechically sound (no weird noises, drives clean - no jerks, sputters, etc) I wouldn’t be afraid of something with a trashed interior.

Rangers are decent trucks and there are a ton of 'em out there. Without an in-person inspection it's really hard to make a decision, but @saxtech is right about the interior. Look like it was never cared for and that's an indicator of the attention paid - or not paid - to the rest of the truck. I'd be willing to bet there's a ton of ugliness underneath.

Keep looking and if you do find one, do not hesitate to come back and ask for advice. And if you do end up with one, the gentlemen here have helped many a novice (me for instance) through some complicated issues.

If you aren't afraid of taking a road trip look in our forsale page here on the forum see whose got what and where
