I'm a new ranger enthusiast. I've owned a 2001 2.3 manual 2wd for 5 years now, and just started becoming interested in modifying it. I've been doing a lot of reading over the past few weeks about rangers, most of it on this site. I don't know enough to work on engines but I know my way around a car about as much as your average guy. My ranger is completely stock right now. This site seems to have a great, knowledgeable community so I thought I'd finally start posting.

I'm looking for some very cheap or free upgrades / mods to do to my truck to make it more fun to own, and one of the things I've been considering is cutting the muffler. It's a 2.3 so I'm not sure what the results would be. I know it would be whiney, but would the sound be completely unbearable or would it sound like a souped ricer, or maybe an old POS? I've never done much with exhaust. If I did cut it it wouldn't have to be the whole muffler. I want to state clearly that I know it would not sound like a hemi if this was done. I know it is a tiny engine and would sound like one. Basically I would like it to sound louder, and cool. Even if it's just cutting the exhaust tip off. I like the whole beat up woods truck concept and I am in the process of looking at some tires and a few other mods.

Anyone messed around with this at all? Couldn't find too much info on the topic as far as rangers or even small pickups go. Any info, help, suggestions, and warnings are appreciated!http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Well I would advise not cutting it off. I would imagine it would either sound like a beater or a ricer.

Use the search forum at the top of the screen to find info about performance parts and stuff. I think your best be for a fun little truck would be a turbo 2.3 swap.

you can get a replacement muffler for pretty cheap at your local parts store. flowmaster will run you about 70 bucks but maybe a cherry bomb wouldnt sound too bad for about half the price

theres also a thread on here that shows you how to make a cold air intake for pretty cheap

Flowmaster would likely sound the best, or a glasspack.

IIRC you have to legally have a muffler on your vehicle if it came equipped with one for street travel.

I had a muffler fall off on my Ranger with a 3.0L.... it sounded really cool for about the first 20 miles, then I was digging a set of ear plugs out of my stash for work....

I agree with the other guys.....just get a good muffler :) I personaly hate the loud "ricer" noise.....sounds like a perverted chainsaw on steroids.

Thanks guys. I looked into the cherry bombs and they might be a good solution. Maybe I'll play around cutting it up and then go in for one if I don't like the results. I would be pretty satisfied if it sounded like a perverted chainsaw on roids haha

or just get a bigger tailpipe section that will make it deeper and probably a little louder

Get a chambered muffler, like a flowmaster 40.

Summit Racing sells a Thrush fully welded muffler, which is exactly the same as a flowmaster 40, and is only like 30$.

I have a Cherry Bomb on mine too and it sounds really good. It has a deep sound and doesn't have a "buzz" to it. If you get a Cherry Bomb get a long one, they tend to have a deeper sound. I got the 31" one and used a turn down right out of the muffler. I hate when the motor is too quiet and you can't hear it,especially with a stick. I have found that just a turn down will quiet the exhaust some.
